That night Liesl was cross-stitching a rose up on her bed. She then noticed Fraulein Maria walking around and looking at the lake outside.
Maria was obviously happy to be back but Liesl noticed an unknown tension as well and found it odd that she'd be taking a walk that late at night. It was about 11:00. She had only seemed that relaxed when the children had been in her room earlier that evening but didn't want to hear them complain about the baroness marrying their father.
Nevertheless Liesl relaxed and agreed with Marta 'everything would work out fine'.
She continued to stitch and glance out the window occasionally. She noticed a few minutes later that the governess slowly started to walk to the gazebo where Liesl had been with Rolf so long ago. She was about to continue working when she saw her father head in the same direction. She couldn't believe it, she had to investigate.
She put on her slippers and walked past the bedrooms and towards the nursery, trying her best to be quiet. This was really unnecessary because Friedrich, Louisa and Brigitta were chatting in the nursery.
"Why are you in here?" Liesl popped her head in
"Can't sleep" Louisa said slumping back in a chair
"I'm happy but shaky" Friedrich added
"Why are you up" Brigitta turned the question back at her sister
Liesl smirked "because you'll want to see this".
In the next few minutes all the children were woken up and scurried like church mice down the stairs.
"Are you sure that's what you saw?" Brigitta asked her sister as she followed
"Yes" Liesl answered as she joined her brothers and sisters who were already on the back patio
The all were crouched down behind the ledge so as not to be seen. They were squished together and all fought to get the best view of the gazebo as possible.
"Do you see them?" Kurt asked
"Yeah" Friedrich responded
"What are they doing" Marta asked
"They just walked into the gazebo together" Friedrich responded "they're just talking"
"Well that's disappointing" Brigitta said dryly
Silence passed for a few seconds
"Wait" Louisa said
"What?!" Gretl asked
"I think they just kissed" Louisa replied with a grin and bit her lip
All the children grew excited and smiled and laughed
"Shut up" Friedrich said
"Calm down" Liesl added firmly "I know it's exciting but we can't get caught"
"Let's just wait. They'll come back eventually" Kurt suggested.
So the children waited for what felt like an eternity, they were stiff and the younger ones were growing impatient out of tiredness. However, just as they were dozing off Kurt spoke.
They're coming" he whispered. All the children assumed their previous positions peering over the ledge and slowly stood. Louisa was holding Gretl and Kurt had moved to sit on the ledge itself. They all saw their father and Maria walking toward them. They weren't touching and no one said anything as the adults came face to face with the children.
"Children" the Captain began "I've thought about it and I'm not getting married to Baroness Schrader."
The children smiled.
"Maria and I have talked about it and we both agree she really didn't have your interest at heart"
"We know" Brigtta said loudly then immediately regretted it.
"However" Maria walked towards the children and put her arms around Louisa and Kurt "your father has something else he'd like to discuss with you and might as well do it now since you're up" she smiled
"Yes" the Captain continued "how would you feel if Maria got to stay?" He shrugged his shoulders.
"That would be wonderful" Liesl said.
"I'm glad to hear that" Maria said hugging the two children closer to her.
"What would you say if" the Captain walked over to Maria and she joined him and he put his arm around her waist "we got married instead?"
Everyone stood in shock until Marta shouted "are you kidding! That would be amazing!" As she ran to hug them.
The others followed suit and there was a mess of hugs and kisses and laughter. Maria scooped up Gretl on her hip and the little girl gave her almost mother a hug "I knew you were different" she whispered.
No one could hardly sleep from the excitement that night. No one made it to their rooms.
The next morning Frau Schmidt went to go wake the little girls up since they hadn't come down and saw the nursery door was open. She pushed it open a tad more and peeped her head in. She had an idea about what happened last night due to the fact the baroness had gone the night before. She looked around the room at the scene.
She found Louisa stretched out on a window seat with Friedrich stretched out on the ground next to her. The captain was asleep on a small sofa with Kurt on his right and Liesl on his left. Maria was leaned back in a chair across from them with her arms wrapped around a sleeping Gretl. Marta and Brigitta were in between the two pieces of furniture on a rug and curled up in a shared blanket.
Frau Schmidt typically would have been appalled, but she hadn't seen a sight like this in a long time. It reminded her of Christmases and birthdays of the past. Except now the babies were grown up and the woman who occupied the chair was different, but she was still part of the family.
Ain't that cute. They finally got together. Don't worry it's not over yet. We've still got a way to go
