After the puppet show all the children got changed and ready for bed. Liesl and Louisa met in the hall.
"Did you see that?" she asked her sister.
"For the sneaky one you are rather loud" Liesl hushed her sister.
"See what?" The boys said peeping out of their room, which the girls happened to be standing in front of.
Liesl rolled her eyes "my room now." She said and they set off and jumped on her white fluffy bed.
"Liesl!" Louisa got her sister's attention as she grabbed a green pillow with some stitching on it and hugged it to herself.
"What?" Kurt was confused
"What's going on?" Friedrich asked as he sat on the side of the bed with Louisa parallel to his little brother.
Just then a nosy Brigitta entered the room and sat on the bed between her brothers.
"Brigitta get out" Kurt tried to push her off the bed "this is older kid stuff"
"In case you forgot I'm ten now which means I'm only one year younger than you which means now I'm an older kid." She retorted crossing her arms.
Liesl got up to shut the door that had been thrown open.
"Whatever" Louisa shook her head "I think Father and Fraulein Maria love each other"
Liesl slammed the door "Louisa! I told you to be quiet"
"You said be quiet not dishonest" she hugged the pillow closer to herself to act as a shield.
"What!?" The boys and Brigitta were shocked.
"But the baroness" Kurt added
"All Louisa was trying to say is that they seem to be getting along better" Liesl explained rejoining her siblings on the bed and trying to calm them down.
"Well, we know that, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything" Friedrich added with some skepticism as he had a similar idea.
"But come on, you saw the way they looked at each other tonight" Louisa said
Liesl did indeed see as she had a rather good view from her chair. She looked at Rolf a certain way, but that even paled in comparison to her father and the governess.
"Oh I thought you were talking about when we were building the puppet stage or the other day when she went to the market" Brigitta leaned back against the footboard. All of her siblings immediately shot their gaze towards her.
"What? I notice things." She shrugged
"What about the baroness?" Kurt spoke once again to gather everyone's attention.
"Why do you keep bringing that up" Friedrich was irritated.
"I don't really like her quite honestly" Brigitta added again.
"Well get used to it because there's nothing we can do about it, you all are old enough to know why she's here" Liesl was discouraged.
"What if we convinced father to make some sort of arrangement to have Maria still be our governess" Kurt suggested.
"That's not the point, or possible" Louisa said throwing the pillow at her brother.
"It's no use. I know she's planning on sending us to boarding school and then send us girls off to be finished" Liesl sighed.
"She's basically going to have us split up?!" Friedrich nearly screamed. He and Liesl had worked too hard to keep them close and they were each other's best friends. Sure, they fought but everyone did. The point was that they wanted to stay at the schools they were at and not be sent away.
The children continued to sit in silence for a few more moments, all being terrified at the very thought of being apart.
'Then we have to get Father and Fraulein Maria together" Louisa said as if it were the simplest thing.
"It's not that easy. We have to think about father's happiness too, not to mention Maria's" Liesl explained as she hugged Brigitta close to her.
"But we can at least try to make them fall in love, you know put them in certain situations" Brigitta sat up a little
"Yeah" Kurt agreed
"The thing is they kinda do that on their own" Friedrich shot the idea down "there's not a whole lot we can do."
"What do you mean?" Louisa was interested in the first part of his statement.
"The other day I saw them putting up the rowboat together" he said
"But that's Franz's job" Brigitta said
"But you know fraulein Maria, she wouldn't let him do that after she tipped the boat. She insisted on doing it herself and Father came out later to help I guess" he added.
"When did you see that?" Liesl asked
"Marta wanted to do her daily bird check and we walked back through the backyard" he explained
"Honestly if we're together they're together" Brigitta leaned back on her arms
"Let's just leave it. You can't force these things" Liesl tried to gain some sense.
"But what if-" Brigitta tried to interject
"Leave it" Liesl firmly said
"Liesl, you know what'll happen if-" Kurt was cut off by a knock on the door and the children watched the knob turn.
Maria popped in and gave them a look that said 'i could slap you but I won't'.
"Bed" she motioned out the door and four children scurried out.
Maria followed Louisa and Brigitta into their room since she knew they were the sneaky ones.
She tucked Brigitta in and she was Brigitta asked "Fraulein Maria have you ever loved someone before?"
"Yes" Maria sat down a little shaky due to her response "I love the sisters at the abbey, particularly one as if she was my own sister and of course I love the Lord" she said reaching for the lamp on the little girl's nightstand.
"But have you ever been in love?" Brigitta asked turning and propping her head in her hand. Meanwhile Louisa was struggling to keep her mouth shut by putting a pillow over her face
"Why all the questions?" Maria asked as she held Brigitta's hand and rubbed it in a matronly way. Maria sighed "no, when in the convent we pledge our life to God, in the most holy of love" she explained.
Brigitta gave Maria a sad look "that must take dedication" Louisa interrupted in order to save the situation.
"Yes" Maria quietly agreed and rose "Well goodnight girls" she exited the room and softly shut the door.
"You're lucky I don't have you sent to the Abbey" Louisa said looking at her sister and threw a pillow at her.
