                   *A WEEK BEFORE THE
                     MALL ENCOUNTER*

"Damn, have these halls always been this quiet?" Haruto felt as though he could hear his own heartbeat in his ears from the silence that consumed the left wing of the school. It was 3:15 and people were still in their classes but Haruto had been asked by his homeroom teacher to lock up the left wing doors because he had to leave ealry. Apparently there had been recent problems with the doors so they had resulted to using a chain lock to keep people out, but it seemed that there was a hoodlum going around school and undoing it everyday before school was out.

The further Haruto walked the darker the hall seemed to get until he reached the end of the hall, where the doors window pooled in sunlight from the outside. Haruto sighed, thankful that he was almost done with his task and walked up to the doors to fix the locks. After pulling the first door open he soon saw the problem: inside the place where the door locks in place was a small stone blocking it from locking. Haruto tried taking out the stone but found it hard to stick his finger inside the tiny slot.

Oh, I know, I should just go grab a pencil from the music room since it's nearby. He thought to himself.

He quickly jogged down the hall and turned the corner to the old music room which had just become a storage unit of band instruments
since the school didn't do choir anymore so there wasn't a need for the class to have an entire room to itself. Haruto looked around the room and noticed that the lights towards the back, in the noise cancelling practice room were on. He slowly approached the almost closet like room, a bit nervous that anyone would even dare to go inside such a old, rusty and small space. He made sure to be careful not to be seen by the small door window that lead into the room by crouching over and walking slowly towards the room. The closer he got the slightly more he could hear. Although the sound was faint it made him stop in his tracks. It was such a beautiful but sad sound, the kind that seemed to be pleading out to someone for help. He stayed, unmoving, listening to the music until it stopped. The song was cut short and, the sound of the door opening brought Haruto back to his senses.

"Shit, shit, shit," said the boy standing in front of Haruto, rushing to close the door shut behind him, "she's going to be so mad when she says I came home late." The boy slipped on his backpack but as soon as he turned around he jumped.

"Who the hell are you ?!" He yelled at Haruto, shocked to see he wasn't the only one in the building. Haruto was just as shocked as him and suddenly found it hard to speak. The boy had bangs that almost covered his small dark almond eyes and skinny build.

"I-I'm Haruto Watanabe. It nice to mee-" Haruto began but was cut off quickly by the other boy.

"Have you been spying on me this entire time?"

"W-what? No I -I was just trying to-"

"Did you find me funny? My singing of my struggles? Are you gonna tell me to kill myself like everyone else? Well i'll just do you a favor and get out of your sight. Thanks for the listen." The boy stammered as he tightened his hold on his backpack and stormed out the room, slamming the door behind him.

Haruto stood there shocked by the hostility the other boy had but what bothered him even more was the fact that he didn't even get to tell the boy his thoughts.

"You sounded beautiful."
