10.
At night, when all other students were asleep, Reina stayed back in the school's library to study more on flaring, to improve her performances in class and impress her professor, which she had left a not so good impression on. The library was as silent as a graveyard and the only thing that made sounds occasionally was the slow flipping of her book's pages as she was the only one in there, presently. She sat at the table directly in front of the book racks, and the only thing illuminating her table was a bright red-lighted Iron lamp.
Soon, she rubbed her eyes in sleepiness and closed and carried the heavy book to return it to the racks and go to bed. She pushed it into it's appropriate place and was about to turn to go when she noticed that an unusual black book with diagrams of snakes on it, pushing out slowly, she looks around and found nobody. She goes back to her book and pulls it out of the racks and the black book pushes back in, looking horror stricken, she pushes in her book and the black book pulled out slowly once again, almost like it was saying 'pick me! pick me!"
Shocked, she started pushing her book in and out in a very fast pace and the book continues reciprocating her actions by doing the exact opposite. Forcefully, she pushes her own book in and then the black book falls to the ground.
Looking around cautiously, she walks slowly as if she was treading on egg shells towards the large black book on the floor and picked it up.
She ran her hand through it and saw it's title written bodly at the edge, 'A primer of Shadow Magic'. Curious, she flips it open to the first page and immediately, all the lights of the library snaps off, in fright, she closes the book and the lights turn back of.
Frightened, and with her heart in her stomach, she pushes the book into one of the rack and ran as fast as her legs could carry her to the table she was reading on, to pick up her pencil cases and her other books. Hurriedly, she picks up her open book from the table, and under it was another copy of the strange black book. She froze in a spot and her eyes widened in shock. Frantically, she packed all of her stuff and ran out of the library.
Satisfied with the games she played with Reina, Chandra comes out from behind the book racks, laughing maniacally and then whispers "Soon Enough".
-----------Back in the Creaky old UDM dorms, with diagrams and illustrations of kittens everywhere, the kids were far from being asleep. Currently, they were helping Nory to achieve her goal of being able to flux, the 'Sage way' even after they were forbidded from doing magic. She had fluxed into the kitten and the only issue was being able to hold the form.
"One second", Elliot says while taking a look at the stopwatch in his hands, and Pepper and Andreas who flanked him were staring at the kitten with folded arms."Two", he nods encouragely, "Three", he smiles and nods again, but then, at three seconds, she turned into a creature with a cat's body with a fish tail and the head of a dog and started howling.
Just then, Skriff was at the door to check up on them. "Hey, what the heck is going on in there", he shouts and bangs the door loudly. Quickly using her magical powers, Pepper flicks her hand and flings a huge drawer at the door to prevent it from opening. It lands with a loud thud, making the handles and it's contents slide out.
"Subtle,"Elliot chuckles lightly, mocking the turn out of Pepper's idea.
"Never mind, they don't pay me enough to care and I generally don't care", Skriff shouts again and leaves, when he got no reply from the kids.
Fluxing back into her human form, Nory gets up and asks enthusiastically,"Did I hear four seconds?"
"No", Elliot replies and takes his seat. "And you won't", Pepper sighs and takes her seat.
"Hey, She might", Andreas defends her, his eyebrows creasing in anger.
"She-Won't", Pepper gave up and huffed again as Nory approached them. "Come on you guys", she smiles as she got closer to them, "I used to not be able to hold my cat form at all".
"But I did for three and half seconds, I can do it, I know, I promise you, I'm gonna crash the sage match and prove to the entire faculty that we can be taught and we can do things the right-side up way, the Sage way", she says with determination written across her face and the other three kids got their hopeful smiles up their faces and nod their head, believing in her words.
------------It's another day in Sage Academy of Magic and things are going the normal way, and by that, I mean, the sky is blue as usual, the students are attending classes as usual and the flowers are blooming at usual, and the UDMs also are going about their work as usual. They were currently making their way to the farmhouse to collect the supplies for cleaning.
Reina was in her upstairs room, trying to practice flaring up and popping corns, when she heard happy voices from the down the window and she left what she was doing to check it out, only to find out that it was her best friend, Nory and the other UDMs approaching her, neck deep in a conversation.
"Guys, it's tonight, I know it", Nory says chirpily in her usual loud charismatic voice.
"Ohhh, maybe we should get you some catnip", Elliot chuckles lightly, making fun of Nory and making Pepper and Andreas laugh heartily.
Like always, not ever getting when someone was being sarcastic, she smiles eagerly, "I never even thought of catnip".
"She's doing great without me", Reina thought sadly and snapped her curtain close, feeling pitiful and empty about the fact that here she was, sad and lonely, with no one to talk to and laugh with, while her best friend was able to make other friends.
Chandra who was as always, watching her every move at every step of the way, saw that as the perfect opportunity to execute the second phase of her plans.
Sulking and feeling low in spirits, Reina walked as slow as possible towards her bed and plopped down, only to feel that she was sitting on something.
Hastily, she got up and was hella shocked and very frightened, to see that it was a copy of the Black shadow Magic book that she ran away from, in the library that was laying casually on her bed.
She stepped away from it and stared at it in awe, wondering why the book was everywhere she went. Suddenly, the lights of her room went off and she snapped her neck around but as usual, there was no one around.
Magically, the black pages of the book began to rustle and flip open by itself. Curiously, she took two steps closer to it and it finally stopped at a particular chapter that enticed Reina.
"Manifesting your untapped power", she read the title of the chapter out loud and wondered what it meant and then chandra's words from the other day started lingering in her mind. Taking a look at the bowl of corn that she had failed over and over again to pop perfectly, she looked back at the book and picked it up, holding it close to her chest. Then, some elements on the book began to rise into the air and soon, a black wind surrounds her and starts revolving and revolving, making a loud howling noise, and then, the wind enters her.
She looked around in fright and shock at what she has done and fell to the floor, confused about everything in general and then she takes a look at the bowl of corn and her fingers, a frown plastered on her face.
