"Kate hurry, please! My cheese fries are waiting for me and they're getting cold!" I try to look even more annoyed and impatient so she could get the idea.

"Den I already told you, I have to make sure my funnel cake is fresh out of the oven." She replies eyeing the funnel cakes being made.

I laugh, "An oven? Really? They dip the flour stuff in oil and fry it!"

She gives me an annoyed and equally embarrased look, hands the guy a 10, and grabs the funnel cake. "Okay lets go."

We're making our way to an empty bench when she jolts my arm "Look, it's Garrett!" She hisses.

My heart goes cold and I can't think of anything else to do so I stuff cheese fries in my mouth.

I didn't think he would be here. He had said he would be busy helping his sister. Well maybe he was helping his sister and maybe she wanted to come to the city Carnival with her friends and needed a ride or maybe he wanted to play football last minute and have to I dont know take his sister?... I keep rambling possibilities in my head trying to think of an excuse for him.

Kate snaps me from my thinking, "I thought you said he was busy tonight?" She asks slowly.

"He is." I say my voice craking.

I shut my eyes and try to let my breathing rate slow down. The cool August breeze blows towards me and I smell sausage smoke and funnel cakes. Distinctly I hear kids screaming and the combination of peoples conversation. I had always loved the Carnival but right now it made me want to run to the nearest trash can and puke.

Why would Garrett lie? We were on perfectly good terms last time I checked. But I always tend to overthink so maybe its nothing.

"Here." I hand her my chese fries. "I'm going to, uh, go talk to him." She gives me a symphathethic look.

"Don't eat my fries!" I tell her giving her a death glare.

I adjust the hem of my skirt, smooth down my hair and start walking towards him.

I can hear my heart beating in my ears but it can't be because I shouldn't be nervous about talking to my own boyfriend.

His back is facing me. He has one leg up on top of the bench and his elbow resting on it. I can see the breeze rustling his hair ever so gently and I can distinctly smell his cologne.

"Garrett, uh hey!" I say. He turns around and gives me a smile that shows his pearly whites. "Oh hey there hun, didn't think I'd see you here." He says rather well not amused.

"I uh, told you I would be here.. remember?"

"Oh yes, right!"

"Why did you end up coming?"

"Came with the bro's they picked me up."

Before I could respond a tall blonde girl with curly hair comes up to him.

"Garrett! Play the game where you have to pop the balloons with the darts so you can win me a bear!" She practically squealed in my ear.

"Um, excuse me?" I say sharply.

"Oh, you must be his sister!" She turns to him, "I thought we were going to pick her up later at 11?"

Everything happens in slow motion.

Her turning to look at me with a cheesy smile. Her hair practically bouncing. His stammering excuse. Her oblivious questioning of who I was. His decision of who to keep. Her taking him by the arm. Him walking away disappearing in the sea of people. Me standing there. Kate hugging me saying absurd things about murdering Garrett. Being dragged away from the harsh reality I had just witnessed but seen coming.

Why did I trust him.

He had everything of me.

My Bruno Mars t-shirt, my worn guitar, my favorite movie, my secrets, my virginity, my camera with the pictures of what happened in Brooklyn the night of the accident.

Why does this always happen to me. Maybe there's something wrong with me.
