My Brother's Best Friend

"Where's dad?" Kaida asked her mother with curious look. What was she supposed to say? She couldn't tell her 3 year old daughter that her father got up and left without a word. She doesn't even know why he left. Was it the stress of a child finally taking over? Maybe he was scared that his wife had been diagnosed with cancer. That was a while ago though. Her guess was that he was just a dickhead, nothing more to it.

"Why don't you go play with Josh and Levi, I'm sure he'll be back soon." She plastered on a smile and gave her a loving hug before joining Dave and Mike, Levi's dad and Joshua's Dad. "How am I supposed to tell Kaida about... him?" She couldn't even say his name.

"You could maybe tell her that he's on holiday?" Mike suggested. He was handling Thomas leaving his best friend without a reason better than Dave. As in he stayed calm for Rose's sake whilst Dave couldn't even talk about him or else he might kill someone. Of course Mike felt the same but he knew that that would make her feel worse.

"No one goes on holiday and never comes back, Mike. She's a smart girl, even if she is three, she'll find out." She gazed at her daughter playing with her two best friends, wondering why her dad would do that. "Would it really make much of a difference now that he's gone?" She wondered out loud. "He was never really involved in the first place. He was always just sat on the sofa, watching TV."

"If I ever see his fucking face again, I'm going to grab a fucking brick and-"

"What does fucking mean?" Kaida cut Dave off.

"Bad word, sweetheart. You aren't allowed to say it." Rose smiled to her.

"Were you talking about Thomas?" Joshua walked over with Levi.

"Is he coming back soon?" Levi grinned.

"Mama said he is!" She giggled. Dave sighed and knelt down to get to around her level.

"Kaida, your dad has went away and he won't be back for a very long time." He told her.

"But, mama said he'll be back soon." She looked up at the three adults with tear-filled eyes.

"I know but... um... he just called and said that he's going away from a couple of years and that he won't be able to talk to any of us..." He needed a moment to think. "He said that he loves you and that he's sorry." As he spoke, a tear fell from her eyes. Then another. Then another. Then she exploded. Tears fell down her cheeks like a waterfall.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart." Her mother picked her up and took her home.

Kaida said goodbye to her mother on her 5th birthday, her death was caused by cancer. She had to move into her uncle's house that was positioned all the way in France. 6 years later, her uncle went to prison. Why? Well, only Kaida, Dave and Mike know that. She moved back to her home country, to her home town. Going to secondary school, she met back up with Joshua and Levi. Although they had been apart for years, they already knew something had happened in the time that she was gone. She was different. The same but different. She was still caring and sweet and would put everyone before her but she wasn't as happy. They didn't even see her smile until she was 13. That smile meant everything to Josh. He was obsessed with it and would do anything, everything, to make her smile. A year before that, Levi's dad adopted the former orphan child. He was always like a father to her and Levi was always like a brother. Besides, Levi said that it gave him an excuse to beat up everyone and anyone who hurt her at all.

That leads us to today, 16 year-old Kaida and 17 year-old Joshua and Levi. What will happen?
