This is a modern au, but they're passing letters back and forth.  

TW: Homophobia, brief mentions of murder and suicide, mentions of abuse. Let me know if I missed any!

Dear John Laurens, 

I hope you're doing alright today. I'm currently in class while writing this to you. I'm getting back to you asking me out to coffee. I would love to go, but every major person in my life might actually kill me if I went. I'm sorry, I wish I could go with you, you seem like a very kind man, but I'm sure you know how our school is, the last person to come out got killed, and the one before that killed them self. I hope you understand.

Dear Alexander Hamilton, 

I am doing pretty well, hopefully you're doing the same. I'm at my dorm writing this. I understand fully, I was very scared just asking you out honestly. I thought you'd respond saying something about me thinking you were gay and I'd have to play it off as some joke. Maybe we don't have to hand out in public? Maybe we could just pass these notes back and forth, and get out of here as fast as possible? I wish we could text, but Thomas likes to randomly go through people's phones for no reason, I hope you have not had that happen yet. It could be a friend group thing.

I would love to continue this, I wish we could do it in person. I'm so sorry Thomas goes through your phone, although are you actually friends with him? He doesn't sound like a great friend. I do think it is a thing for his "friends" as I've asked my friends, Lafayette and Hercules, and neither of them have had that happen. I've managed to find the small group of accepting people here and they know that I'm talking to you. Don't worry, I haven't told them you're not straight yet. I made up an excuse that your "friend" Thomas Jefferson would not be kind. If you would like to hang out with us instead, you're completely welcome, although I'd understand if you don't want to, it was risky enough asking me out. How did you manage that? One last thing, what is your sexuality? I'm bisexual.

Dear Alexander Hamilton,

You don't have to be sorry, I've dealt with Jefferson for a while, since elementary school actually. I'm very glad you want to continue with this. You don't know. I'm glad you have accepting friends, but I would prefer you to keep my gayness a secret. And Thomas would not be kind if he knew we were legitimately talking. On that note, I would love to join your group, but I don't want to draw attention to you all, as Jefferson may come after you. And to answer your question on how I managed to ask you out? A magician never reveals his secret. For your last question, I am straight gay. (That's a fun little oxymoron for you) I'm glad you have a chance to be normal with your sexuality. Although I guess you have more resources than I do as well, so being completely gay wouldn't hurt you as much. Anyway, I guess we should  get to some basic getting to know each other questions. What's your favorite color? Do you prefer nighttime or daytime? Favorite food? I'll answer these questions and any others you may have in my next letter. I'm running out of time right now. I'll write to you later!

I know you said I don't have to be sorry about Jefferson, but since elementary school? That's crazy. I understand wanting people to know, I won't tell them. I'm sorry coming to a more comfortable friend group would just cause Jefferson to go after us all. I loved your oxymoron, I laughed out loud. Not even joking, my mother was so confused. My favorite color is between blue and green. I much prefer nighttime, no-one questions my non-stop writing then. I don't actually have a favorite food. Although Mom's cooking always beats anything else. I'm interested to find your answers in your next letter. I do have one question. These letters seem so formal, do you have a nickname you like? I like Alex. I'm currently googling questions, there are a lot that I'm not going to ask, but I found some. What's your dream job?  What's your love language? What's your favorite holiday? You don't have to answer the second one. I was just curious.
