Chapter 1

Kitters' kisses

*Penny's POV*

"Stop!" I yelled as my mother kicked me out of the house.

She pushed me out and threw a suit case at me. I opened it to see my laptop, a couple of clothes and my kitten Cheyenne. I held her close since she was the last happiness left in my life. I stand up and zip my suit case back closed. I slowly started to walk away. Not knowing where i was going. Only knowing I want to go somewhere. Anywhere besides here. I tucked Cheyenne into my pocket and pet her little orange and white head. A little meow escaped her mouth as I did so.

"Don't worry Cheyenne. We will go somewhere where we are treated right"

I brushed my blue bangs out of my face and looked ahead at the train tracks. The only place that could bring me anywhere. In this small country road is only two houses. My old one, and my neighbour: Katie Haswill. A 91 year old woman who has nothing better to do then knit for my mother. Scarfs, Hats, Blankets. Anything you name. I hop on to the tracks and feel a rock under my shoes. I start walking making sure I don't lose any balance. I keep my head held high because I know that a train can come and wipe me out any minute. Click. Click. Click. I hear the clicking of my suitcase on the tracks. Oh why oh why was I so stupid. Why did I go out of my way and did the oh so stupid things I did. It all started with these stupid piercings I say as I feel my diamond earrings. Then the hair. Blue. Why did I do that? Mom saw my grades dropping. Bobby gave me Cheyenne since I had to one else to talk to. Oh sweet sweet Bobby. My sweetest friend ever or so I thought. God mothers ruin everything...

I got so distracting thinking about everything that I barely noticed the rumbling coming from my feet. I jumped off the tracks and listened. Nothing. I put my hand on the track and felt a rumble coming from the right. Number 209 to Montreal, right on time. I see the train turn the corner as it's head light flashes though the orange sunset sky. It came closer and closer. It was moving at a fairly small speed. Must be stopping to pick some rich kids up at the station. I look down at Cheyenne tucked in my pocket. Sleeping with no care. I take a step back and watch as the train got closer and closer.

"3," I whispered

"2, 1!"

And I grab a handle of one of the train cars. I pull myself up and pull up my suitcase next to me. Then I just stand and watch as my whole life is leaving me. I hold on tightly to the handle and the cold breeze sweeps though my hair. I take a deep breath just to breath it all in. I watch in till I hear a loud sound. I swing around to see a man that is in a suit that has a name tag.

"Francois?"

"Yes. Are you an official Via Rail member?"

"Uhh. No"

"Then I'm afraid you are just going to have to get off-"

"I'm sorry but could I speak to Zachary your engineer please" I say as I lean on one of my hips.

"Right this way." Then man says as he pushes open a door.

"Follow me kid"

I follow him though a passenger car. I see babies. Wives and husbands. Children playing cards. Men reading newspapers. Woman knitting blankets. Everything is so close yet so far.

"Here," Francois says with a smart french accent.

"Thanks" I say though my teeth.

I walk in to another car that has many different brakes and buttons. More electronic then the past where they shovelled coal in a furnace. This was a bit more different. They had a nice black leather seat and in front was a full panel of buttons. A square plastic box sat in the back left, a wired phone on the left and a first aid kit tucked behind the panel on the right. I walk in and sit on the box. I put my hands in my pocket and cross my right leg over my left one hiding a small black stain I got from touching my jeans with my dirty hand.

"Haven't seen you around here often young lady" I heard from behind the chair

"Haven't have much time to adventure" I responded.

"Hmm. So how's the fam?"

"Crappy." I blurted sticking out my tongue and crossing my arms.

"Oh? So what brings you on my train to Montreal on this fine evening?"

"My mum kicked me out." I mumbled

"What's that?" He asked

"MY MUM KICKED ME OUT OF THE FREAKING HOUSE BECAUSE SHE SAID I WAS A DISGRACE TO THIS FAMILY" I yelled

"Settle down farm girl. This train is strict business and we can't have you yelling around here."

"Sorry sir."

I stood up and walked over to Zach. I couldn't look at him in the eyes since he was focusing on driving the train. I leaned my arms on the little desk in front of the panel and just looked at him. A brown haired man with a bit of grey. Blue eyes that have more trust in them then anyone else in my life. Freckles lining his top cheeks. Rosy cheeks. A very focused man.

"Now Darlin. Don't go pretending you don't have something to hind in that pocket of yours"

He starred straight in to the window without looking at me. Yet he knows things and I can't even explain it.

"Oh this little kitters. Here, Cheyenne, give Zachy a kiss"

"Ohh no!"

And just like that little Cheyenne pecked Zach's cheek.

"Ahaha what a sweet heart."

"Yea. She's true happiness wrapped in fur" I said with a smile.

"Yup. Now staying in this car is no place for my god daughter. Go find yourself a nice seat in the first class. Captain's orders"

"Actually," I stood up and walked to the window on the left, "I'll rather hang out here"

"Suits yourself sugar pop"

I put Cheyenne on the side of my hood and she started sleeping right away. I look outside to see the hills and trees pass me. I brush my blond and blue hair to the side and whisper,

"Next top, Montreal"
