When Bokuto saw Kuroo's ex-grilfriend at the wedding he immediatly ran to Kuroo and pulled him aside.
"Bro, Suki is here", Bokuto told him wide eyed.
"I know", Kuroo groaned "I even asked Kenma to come with me as my pretend date so I don't look that miserable in front of her".
"Well then you should go and entertain your pretend date", Bokuto grinned "he looks bored".
"Yeah, I forbid him to bring his phone", Kuroo grinned and walked towards Kenma after saying "goodbye bro".
"Bye", Bokuto waved then mumbled "pretend date, my ass".
He then walked over to where Akaashi was talking to the newly wed couple.
"He had some rough days and I brought him here so he wouldnt get depressed at home. He really loves weddings", Akaashi said fondly and smiled as Bokuto joined them.
"Wouldn't he have been your plus one anyway?", Kiyoko asked.
"What do you mean?", Akaashi tilted his head to the side.
"Well aren't you a couple since forever?", Tanaka questioned "you are together right?"
"No", said Akaashi while simultaniously Bokuto's answer was "yes!"
The two looked at each other shocked.
"You...", Akaashi was the first to speak up "think we are a couple?"
"You don't?", Bokuto asked Akaashi and then himself "we are not?"
Akaashi watched as Bokuto slowly registered what is happening. He just wanted to reach out and pull him in his arms and tell him that it was okay. But could he do that now? After what he just discovered?
He tried to catch Bokuto's eyes but he seemed to avoid looking at him. Kiyoko and Tanaka seemed frozen. Neither knowing what to do.
"Bokuto", Akaashi tried using his voice again and it was raspy but understandable enough to talk on "why did you think we are in a relationship?"
"Because I love you Akaashi", Bokuto said and his voice made Akaashi's heart break into a million pieces.
"But we didn't even kiss", Akaashi spoke as softly as he could and supressed all the confusion he felt.
"But we did kiss", Bokuto insisted "I kiss your cheek and your hair all the time".
"But that's not a real kiss, Bokuto", Akaashi stressed.
"I thought you just weren't ready for that", Bokuto looked defeated "it felt real to me anyways".
He took a deep breath and Akaashi had to watch him sniffle and see his eyes become full of tears that he tried so hard not to let loose. He watched him take another shaky breath and then he looked right into his eyes as he found the strength to look up. What he saw was simply pain.
"It felt as real as all the times you held me in your arms and told me everything was gonna be okay. All the times you kissed my temple and whispered in my ear when I was having another panic attack. When you waited for me after practice so I wouldn't have to walk home alone. When you came to me and slept in my bed when there was a thunderstorm because you said you felt safer with me. How you always bought my favourite ice cream although you don't like it as much. I thought you did that because you love me too. You never said it but I didn't need to hear it when I was able to feel it every day", the tears fell and Akaashi needed to hold himself back from starting to cry as well "was I wrong? Do you not love me Akaashi?"
Akaashi had listened to his words thoroughly and was hit in the face with a truth that he had missed. All these years that he had loved Bokuto and wasn't able to say it, all those years he hurt because he thought they could never be. Bokuto thought they had been in a relationship already. How could he not have seen it? How could he not have said something? He could have been happy so long ago.
"How was I this dumb?", he finally sighed exhausted "how could I not notice that we were behaving like a couple?"
"Does that mean you didn't intend to do those things?", Bokuto asked and the pieces of Akaashi's heart were crushed even more.
"I didn't think about it when I did it", Akaashi admit and Bokuto's face turned towards the floor as he nodded in understanding "my head didn't. It was like I was working on autopilot. It just felt right to go to you when I was afraid and to be there for you when you had a panic attack. It felt right to buy the stuff you like because I would see you smile and that would be worth it. It always felt right with you".
Bokuto tilted his head upwards again looking confused like a child.
"I have been so dumb", Akaashi chuckled "how could I not tell you that I love you sooner?"
"You...", Bokuto lifted his head to finally look at him fully "... love me too?"
"I have loved you since high school", Akaashi admit "I was too afraid to say something and was just happy to be with you. I never thought you would feel the same or even see what's really going on".
"So we have been in a reltionship all along, huh?", Bokuto dared to smile a little.
"I can't believe you were smarter than me but yeah", Akaashi smiled "I guess we have been in a relationship for a long time".
"I love you 'kaashi", Bokuto smiled and pulled him closer by the waist.
"I love you too", Akaashi leaned in and finally - finally - connected their lips "thank you for making me see what we already have".
"I can't believe you were the dumb one this time", Bokuto said and Akaashi started laughing along with Tanaka and Kiyoko who still stood beside them observing the whole thing.
"I am so happy you trust in your feelings that much", Akaashi pulled him in a kiss again "I love you so much".
"I love you too 'kaashi", Bokuto smiled and grabbed his hand "do you want to dance?"
"Yeah go dance with your boyfriend", Kiyoko smiled as Akaashi hesitated.
"I would love to", he blushed and let himself be led to the dancefloor.
