"Sam?" A voice said. I was shaking in the little ball I was squeezed into in my dark room. I was crying and breathing heavily as footsteps quickly walked towards me.
"One" I counted silently to myself. "Two"
"Sam?"
"Three." I braced myself for the pain while holding my breath yet the pain never came. There was not a sharp pain that sprung from the side of my head. There was not a steel toed boot kicking my ribs in, the cracking of bones smothered with my screams and his laughs.
"Bam! Cut the shit!" A loud feminine voice bellowed out the door as I heard footsteps come closer. I was still cowered in a tight ball with my back against the wall. A more masculine voice replied but I was too trapped in my own small world to make out what it had said. "Sam! Sweetheart, What's the matter?" April said gently just before kneeling down in front of my quivering form, placing a warm hand on my shoulder. Not thinking, I flailed away from the touch causing April to gasp slightly in surprise. As I came to and noticed it was only April, I released my grip a bit and raised my head.
"I'm sorry, April, I really am it's just I thought all of those loud noises was Derek because I thought he had found me" My voice ended with a crack as I burst into tears again.
"Shh" April cooed "Everything is okay sweetie, you're safe..." She continued in a reassuring voice. April repeated the action while rubbing soothing circles on my back quite a few times until I stopped crying. If anyone else was in April's position right now, dealing with by hysteria, out the front door I would go. "Are you alright now?" April asked me in a gentle voice once I had settled, I replied with a nod and a small thank you. "Is there anything at all I can get you?" She asked me and once again I politely rejected the offer as I looked at her face. April's maternal instincts mustv'e kicked in as I realized her face was full of concern and worry. I had just met this woman a few hours ago and she had already made her way into my heart. "Now, if you need me through the night just holler, alright?" I nodded while thanking her and before I could control myself I embraced April in a hug. April squeezed me tight, this is the most comfort I had received in quite awhile and it felt different. Once we had both released, April said goodnight, assured me that I was safe and was off to bed.
My hands were still shaking like leaves on a tree leading me to the decision that I needed to get some water or something. I wasn't quite comfortable with roaming the house by myself while April and Phil was asleep but my throat felt like sand paper. Just as I was about to walk out the door I looked down and realized that I was wearing thin sleep shorts making me feel pretty exposed in a house I am new to. Before I made my journey downstairs, I walked over to my suitcase (which I still need to unpack) and pulled out a pair of concealing sweatpants. I noticed my favorite childish pair of monkey slippers in the bottom of my bag and pulled those on too just for the fun of it. Continuing my expedition to the kitchen, I walked as silently as I could through the house, hoping to run into no one as I'm sure I have makeup streaked down my face. At the thought, I automatically wiped my eyes vigorously. My monkey house slippers squeaked quietly as I walked along the hard wood floor. The large house was rather chilly which I quickly took notice to as I made my way to the kitchen and flipped the switch on. I retraced my steps to where April told me to put away the clean glasses. Grabbing a cup from the cabinet and filling it up with water from the tap. Suddenly I jumped, throwing my cup and the water inside every which way, at the sudden cabinet door that was just opened behind me. I let out a slight whimper as I looked down at my soaked tee shirt and turned around to see a dark haired man looking straight at me.
"Did I scare you?" The man said with an airy laugh filled with taunting. "I'm Bam and I'm going to take a wild guess and say that you are the famous Sam?" He presumed. I replied with a small nod,
"Nice to meet you" I said quietly, feeling uneasy around the younger man. I slowly reached for a dry dish towel that was laying on the granite counter top, trying to soak up all of the water that I had spilled. I heard Bam let out a simple grunt from behind me as he also grabbed a dry dish towel and began soaking up the water that had landed on the floor. "I've got this, you should continue what you were doing" I told him uneasily, watching for some sort of breaking point that would cause him to blow up.
"No, no. I scared you and I'll help clean it up" Bam insisted. I tried to protest but Bam cut me off so I stopped just in case I might be pushing his buttons. I was wiping up the counters as Bam began to laugh. I looked at him strange but figured it would be best if I just didn't ask questions. I had finished wiping up the counter top and moved to the floor, shifting my entire body towards Bam and leaning down. Seconds after I started to help him dry the area, he started laughing again only this time it was louder.
"What is it?" He looked at me funny but continued to laugh. In between bursts of laughter he managed to choke out that he was laughing at my slippers. I had almost forgot that I had my monkey slippers on and my face started to heat up. After a few seconds, he realized that I wasn't laughing with him so Bam's laughter slowly died out much like the water as we met in the middle with our now sopping dish towels. All of the water was gone once both of our dish towels were now brushing each other as we continued to wipe. I held my hand out to collect the dish towel Bam was using, he dropped the dripping piece of cloth in my hand as our eyes met.
