This based on war in France
———Screaming and crying, that's all I could hear. Whether it be from losing someone, or from battle cries. That's all that could be heard throughout this land. I got used to it though, the constant screaming of a mother whose son died in battle or the whimpering of a young child who lost their parents in a raid. It all became familiar to me, especially now, since I'm in the middle of a battle.
The shouting and the screaming and the yelling, it's like it's all been amplified. I can't even think anymore, everything's too loud.
"DJ! What are you doing?!" Someone shouted. I snapped out of my trance and saw my best friend, Séb. I looked at him like he was Bœuf Bourguignon. He sighed, walked towards me and put his hands on both of my shoulders.
"You're going to get yourself killed if you don't focus! I promised your brother that I wouldn't let you get killed, and I don't intend on breaking that promise any time soon," He said, looking directly in my eyes.
"Séb...I don't think I can do this anymore," I said as I gestured to the battle ground and then looked to the ground. Séb gasped in surprise and his grasp on my shoulders suddenly disappeared. "it's-it's all too much. I-I can't anymore, Séb," my voice wavered as I hesitantly looked up at him. He took a couple steps back and–
His eyes, oh God, his eyes.
Some say that eyes are the windows to a person's soul, and his eyes? They were screaming. They held so many emotions in them. Shock. Confusion. Anger. Disappointment.'Why couldn't I just keep my mouth shut?' I angrily thought to myself.
"Dimitri, w-what are you saying?" Séb stuttered, not believing what I had just said.
"No! S-Séb that's not wh–" I started but got cut off by someone yelling. I looked around and saw our General.
"Hey! What are you kids doing? You can't just stop and talk in the middle of a battle! You'll get yourselves killed!" General François shouted. I looked back at Séb and saw a soldier on a warhorse coming straight for him.
My eyes widened in shock and I ran. I just ran and I kept on running until I could reach him.
You know how in movies, they're all like "I saw my life flash before my eyes" and stuff like that? Well, I guess it's true, because I just saw mine. The day I met Séb, the day my parents divorced, the day I enlisted, my brother's funeral, all of it. And then nothing. Just darkness.
'Who am I again?'
