“How’s your work in Milestone School?”
Eli asks me while we’re walking on the corridor of the orphanage.
“It’s ok, I’m learning a lot from Teacher Madeleine while I assist her whenever they call me.” I says with a sigh.
Actually I’m feeling a little bit sad knowing that I’m just an assistant-slash-reliever-slash-aide teacher in Milestone School.
You know, I graduated as an Elementary Teacher in the Philippines. I had a license and 2 years experienced in teaching.
One of my greatest dream is to visits London and due to some unpleasant event that happen to me that time, that I really want to run away and forget. When I saw an ad searching for teachers who want to work in London, I immediately inquire and pursue to complete all of the process and requirements I needed.
I even invested most of my savings in it! The teaching agency promise me a teaching job in some school here in London. They said I only need to comply all of the requirements and the rest is up to them.
When I arrived here in London and goes to the school that promise me a teaching job. I thought heaven and earth crashes on me.
They said they can't hire me as a full time elementary teacher because they prepare those who have QTS (Quality Teaching Status).
In order to have that, I need to pass certain numerical and literacy skills test and undergo training that will took probably a year.
A year?! How can I survived in London and at the same time give back to my family in the Philippines if I need to first take lessons, undergo training and study?!
Knowing that studying and staying here is not free, to be able to survive, I take the job as a Teacher Aide (which has a low salary and not to mention I only act as a reliever whenever they need an extra teacher) and gradually if I have a time take lessons and study.
But because I also need to work for my family, I took every part time jobs that I can get and became so busy.
Somehow the idea of completing all my requirements eventually slips in my mind. To survive and made money became my first priority. Not to mention I really want to forget how devastated I am that I was scam, it became a scary nightmare to me so I totally erase it from my mind.
The 1 year lasted up to this days. Three years in here and I don’t still have the time and money to complete all of the requirements. Sad life.
That's one of the biggest downfall and misfortune in my life. I cried so much but thanks to God, Ivy, Jayjay and all of the people that help me to start again. I manage to survived and continue surviving.
“Oh dear, If only the orphanage can accommodate to hire another teacher I will definitely have you.”
Eli says to me which snaps me back to reality. She grabs my hands giving me comfort knowing how hard for me of my situation.
“Please Eli its ok, no need to worry about me.” I give her a small smile.
“And I will always love to work here even just a volunteer.”
“And that’s the reason why the girls love you.”
She said to me and we started walking again.
“Oh by the way, how’s the elderly in Nursing home?”
Mentioning the nursing home for the elderly I feel sad again. Eli is an active volunteer in elderly home. One of my part time jobs is in the nursing home for elderly where I work as a part time cleaner, but not anymore.
“Last Friday is my last day in nursing home. I gave the work to my roommate who lost her job.”
Aside from JayJay, we also have another Filipino roommate, Ivy. I offer her my job in the nursing home when she said that her boss fire her.
“Oh I see.”
We reach the door and I ready myself to say goodbye to Eli.
But to my surprise she held my arm and look into my eyes.
“There’s something that I really want to tell you Sierrah.”
“What is it Eli?”
“Well, you know I have this principal friend that tells me about this new family who's searching for a home based teacher for a 5 years old boy--”
She looks at me and smile.“--When he tells me about this I immediately remember you. That’s why, please do not be angry ok? I sent him your credentials and resume and he said last night that you have an interview to the family of this boy tomorrow.”
Seeing me in shock, Eli places her hands in my shoulder.
“Please don’t be upset at me--"
“Oh Eli, I’m not upset. That's a great news! Thank you so much!”
I hug her and we both laugh.I actually searching for another job because as I said earlier I gave the cleaning job to Ivy in nursing home, which means I have an extra time.
And knowing me, I don’t want to have a vacant time in my long schedule so this is really a great news!
Work coming on my way without putting much effort. And a home based teacher is not bad. I assume the family is rich to avail a home based teacher for their child, so pay will definitely good. But Eli said that the boy is already 5 years old, why he didn’t enroll in the local elementary school? I ask the question to Eli.
“I don’t have an idea about that Sierrah, But you can ask that question tomorrow on your interview.”
“Yes, yes thank you so much Eli! You really don’t know how much I appreciate this.”
“Well, you need to give your 101% charm tomorrow to get this job so you can pay my effort of sending your resume without your permission.” She laughs.
“I know this job will bring good things to you Sierrah, You deserved happiness.”
I look to her blue eyes and feel overwhelm. Eli is really a good person. I hug her once again and we say goodbye to each other.
Then I walk to my apartment feeling very hopeful for the future..
