XLVI | THE REAPER

A ROUGH LAUGH GRATES OUT into the dark.

"She thinks the Falcone is leaving," says the Reaper.

The other man's smile is white, even in the shadow. His name is Giacomo Genovese, and he is a wolf. "You lied," he says delightedly.

"She was attached," the Reaper explains. "It was necessary."

"Use this time before she realizes, to create her," Giacomo says. It sounds like he is a god, a creator, and he is commanding a work of art. "Make her into something dangerous. Make her into something worthy."

"She's already worthy." The Reaper's voice is hard to identify. "For me, and for your son."

"Ah, indeed," says Giacomo, his laugh light and hearty. "Cassian does think so."

"He has met her?"

"All but once." Giacomo's brown eyes are dark, and his smile doesn't quite match. "When they are married, we will be strong enough to rule not only this city, but all of Sicily."

The Reaper makes a low sound of acknowledgement.

"They will be a beautiful couple, too, don't you think," Giacomo says.

"The Falcone girl needs to go first, or Cadenza will never consider it."

Giacomo gives a surprised laugh, as though he thinks this is childish. "Her and the Falcone were only friends. It won't matter. Once she agrees to marry Cassian, she'll forget about her."

The Reaper's voice is hard, dangerous. "Don't underestimate the Falcone girl. She might not have the resources, but she's powerful."

What the Reaper doesn't say is this: She reminds me of myself as a young Mafia lord. Because she does, because the Reaper remembers being that reckless and ambitious, and he sees the same streak in Angel Falcone. She is someone to watch out for.

But the Reaper is ready to kill her, if that means Cadenza will marry the Genovese.

Because there is nothing he wouldn't do to ensure that this alliance happens.
