Andrew felt determined to come back home and have a normal life, he wanted his mother to think positive, but she just couldn't let her only child go to war.
"Hey mom...maybe I get famous, then you'll have to call me private Malone"-he said trying to cheer her up.
"War is not a game son"-she said without blinking, trying to find something else to look at.
It was too much to take in for her, since she had lost a loved one before, she didn't want his son to be gone.
"I need you to believe I'll be back home, so that's why we are going to buy my car...you go and pick me up in that car okay?"-He said grabbing her face to force her to look at him in the eye.
"Okay"-she said willing to convince herself.
Vietnam 1966:
"I never thought that I could be anyone or anything in life, I never pictured myself among the dust and blood of a war...but here I am, scared of death, scared of not being able to tell his mom that everything was going to okay then all the memories that were beautiful became empty, thought I had died when my father past way, he was my hero...my savior...my everything. But now I'm literally dying second by second. I just wonder how will my mom overcome this...I know pain is part of life but I still hope this is just another dream...mom please wake me up"
Andrew died after a bullet went through his heart and those were his last words.
1996:
It's been 30 years since Andrew was supposed to be home..he never came back, some said he got killed by a bomb, other said he got shot in the head but that didn't matter for a poor mother who was never going to see her son again.
Malcolm P.O.V
While I was going through the newspaper some words in the classifieds caught my attention, it was an ad titled "Old Chevy needs a new owner"
I needed a car but didn't have much money so with only thousand dollars I called that phone number.
"Hello"- An old lady answered.
"Yes ma'am, I'd like to know a little bit more about the old Chevy you are selling"- He said nervously, expecting her to say she still had it.
"You'd have to come and see it honey, it's been in my barn for a long time, and to be honest I'm not quite sure if it works"- She said with a depressing tone.
"It's alright ma'am I can go, but the question is how much are you asking for it?"- Intrigued he asked.
"Like I said before you'd need to come and make sure it works, I don't know anything about cars"-She said honestly.
"I understand, then I'll meet you there in two hours" -Malcolm affirmed
"Perfect,I'll be waiting" - the old lady coughing said.
Two hours later...
"My name is Malcolm "-He said smiling at her.
"I'm Sandra, Mrs.Sandra Malone"- She said attempting to shake his hand with soreness due to her age.
"Nice to meet you Mrs.Malone"-He said, looking for a car behind her.
"You look like my son"- She said staring at him.
"Oh really? And where is he at now?" -He asked her.
"He died 30 years ago...Vietnam killed my baby"- she said almost with tears in her eyes.
"I'm sorry ma'am I didn't mean to..." He said but then she stopped him
"It's alright honey, it's just that everything reminds me of him...specially that car"- She said looking down.
Malcolm didn't know what to do, he just rubbed her shoulder as a sign of comprehension.
"Anyways, let's go see the car"- She told him walking towards an old barn.
