Chapter One
Mankato, Kansas. Sunday October 4th, 2020. 11:34 a.m.
"Jesus fucking Christ," I sighed as I closed the door behind me, leaning back onto the wood and sliding down, not bothering to wipe off the water that was threatening to drip into my eyes from my hair. I looked over at the blinking digital clock sitting on the nightstand and apparently I had been gone for almost three hours. The rain had been consistent since the moment I left the motel room and I became intoxicated by the consistent downpour. Nothing had been feeling too real the past few days, so I suppose I had to take advantage of the opportunity the dark clouds offered me.
I had been staying in a motel for the past three days, with the help from Kara, an old family friend that had recently moved back to town. I made a quick mental note to text her another thank you, once my phone recharged. I had left it on Do Not Disturb and just brought it on my walk just to listen to music. Forcing myself to stand up and walk to the bathroom, I grabbed a towel to dry off.
It wasn't the worst motel I've ever stayed in. It was pretty quiet, the locks worked, and there weren't any dents in the walls, so overall a win. The towels were still white too, which was rare for a place like this. I smiled and took a deep breath, plugging in my dead phone before I dried off and quickly changed clothes. The walk had helped me clear my racing thoughts; maybe I could get through this and go home in one piece once my parents cooled down.
When I came back five or so minutes later, my phone was at ten percent and, for the first time since I left, I didn't have a bunch of texts from my Mom saying that, "we were going to get through this as a family." Or some similar bullshit, neither did I have multiple voicemails from my Dad telling me that I was a coward and that I was running away. Instead, they were replaced with messages from my best friend.
"I heard what happened, are you okay??" Received from Daisy 1 hour ago
"I understand if you're too overwhelmed to say anything back, please at least read these or send a heart or something so I know you're safe... Please." Received from Daisy 34 minutes ago
"God I hope you're okay." Received from Daisy 9 minutes ago
"Please text me back Ash, you're scaring the shit out of me." Received from Daisy 5 minutes ago
"What the fuck happened?" I breathed out loud to myself scrolling through the other messages which said similar things. Feeling myself start to panic, I rolled my shoulders out a few times and forced myself to relax. "It's probably just a prank. People pull this shit all the time, it's fine," I attempted to reassure myself, however I still had a sinking feeling in my stomach. Just as I was about to call Daisy back, my phone rang.
"Kara, hey! I've been meaning to call and thank you again for the motel. I promise I'll be out of here as soon as I can figure out a safe situation... What's up?" I spoke, aimlessly holding the phone between my ear and shoulder as I shuffled the towel back and forth across my scalp, attempting to dry my still dripping short hair. Kara didn't speak, and Ash immediately let the towel fall to the floor and sat down on the bed. "What's going on?"
"Ash, you—you haven't heard?" She asked, her voice cracking. I bit the inside of my cheek and closed my eyes.
"Kara what the hell is going on?" I ask again, my voice becoming harder with nervous anticipation.
"I'm on my way, I'll talk to you when I get there. What's your room number?" She said after pausing to think. I pinched the bridge of my nose between my thumb and index finger and took a deep breath, contemplating whether or not I should push her. "Ash?" she spoke up again.
