Alex lifted her eyes from her phone as soon as the plate shattered on the ground and glanced at me. I could also feel Jacob staring at me in surprise but the moment was ruined already. I continued staring at her as she approached the patio and they both followed my eyes.
As if sensing my gaze, Derek's mom looked at me with a weak smile and I looked away immediately.
My palms were sweaty, this wasn't making sense. Why would my parents invite her over when they knew I was still haunted by Derek's death. I suddenly felt bad and nervous because I still couldn't remember how Derek died even though I was there when it happened. The memory had just refused to resurface like it was wiped away on purpose.
Another reason I was feeling this way was that I hadn't gone to visit Derek's family since the incident, I didn't even attend the funeral even though my parents and Alex had tried to convince me to. Everyone attended that funeral except me.
I watched as she greeted my parents and anxiety gripped my heart. I didn't know when I started twirling my hair in my finger until Jacob held my hand to stop me. Just when I was beginning to enjoy the moment, she appeared and everything was suddenly turning grey.
"Hey__ Donna!" Jacob called rubbing my hands warmly. "Don't look at her, just let it go. I'm here for you."
Alex signalled to him and he volunteered to take me inside the house but I refused. I needed to be around people or I was going to lose my mind. I could feel my anxiety rising from within me and I knew being alone in the house was going to be a really bad idea.
Derek's mom left my parent's side and started walking towards where I was seated, my entire body stiffened and my vision started pixelating. This attack was going to hit me with full force if I didn't do something to stop it.
"Hey Donna, how are you doing? I've not seen you around the house since what happened. I thought you guys would be interested in helping clear out Derek's room." Derek's mom said when she finally got to me.
"Hi Mrs Brooks, Donna isn't feeling well but we're very grateful that you thought about giving us the honour of clearing out Derek's stuff, we'll come around to do that soon," Alex responded while I stared, unable to find my tongue.
Mrs Walters took a seat beside Alex, I could feel her sadness and it was obvious she was fighting back tears. If there's one thing I know, it's the fact that she loved her son so much and they were very close. I couldn't imagine losing my parents or Keith or Olivia, it will ruin me completely.
I took a moment to access her, she had dark circles under her eyes, she looked leaner than the last time I saw her and all her radiance had disappeared. Her skin looked dry and pale, her shoulders were hanging to the ground like she was carrying a very heavy weight. This was the moment it hit me, this woman was going through something I could never relate with. I might have lost a friend but she had lost her son, her source of joy.
