Chapter Six: And So It Begins

I wake up to quite a din at around four o' clock in the morning. The sound of the alarm bell blares loudly three times. Immediately, I leap out of bed and begin tugging on my uniform. I don't need to go check on my soldiers. I know they are doing the same.

And so it begins. The apocalypse of the underground. All of humanity will soon be driven into a tight corner, boxed in by undead loved ones and strangers alike, attempting to crawl their way up the tall wall of survival, at the top lies the cure, and only one person will reach it. Doctor Kocho will be humanity's savior. If I manage to keep her alive long enough.

I pull on my iron-soled boots and dash out the door, dagger clutched in my hand. I turn the corner and quickly come to a stop. I let out a shaky breath too small for most people to detect.

"Captain," she greets me, dressed in gear of her own. "Don't worry too much. The alarm only means that the zombies have breached the wall between us and District Ten. They haven't gotten into the house, but don't let your guard down completely."

I nod in agreement.

"Naho and Kiyo are bringing your soldiers to the lab. We'll all meet up there and begin the plan." Kocho says.

She turns on her heel and begins to lead me. "I think we should move our lab into the cellar and stay there during the apocalypse. I'd already anticipated that this would happen someday, so I've already gotten the cellar ready to accommodate us for a month or two."

"Okay." I say.

The glint of determination in her eyes seems to be screaming that she will survive this; that she will save humanity, without fail.

She tilts her head in my direction, but doesn't turn around. "Also, I have two other comrades. They will also meet us in my lab, and they will be staying with us during the apocalypse."

The doctor seems to sense my unease, because she replies, "They won't hold us back. They know how to fight as well, and they will make themselves very useful to us."

There is a strength in her voice that I've never noticed before. She knows what she's talking about.

"Fine."

She turns her head and flashes me a tiny smile.

I keep walking, ignoring the strange feeling in my stomach.

She flings open the door with authority, and everyone in the room turns in our direction.

"All right," she starts, and everyone quiets down. "I assume you've all been told our plan?"

Kocho waits for us to nod before continuing.

"Good! Then shall we start?" she claps her hands.

We disperse to begin moving everything in the lab. I pick up a table and begin to head down to the cellar. Three hours and a good amount of elbow grease later, the lab is set up, and we've barricaded the cellar door.

"How are your comrades supposed to get inside?" I ask Kocho, jerking my head towards the barricaded door.

She just smiles and points to a small trapdoor by the side of the room, right as the door lifts. Two people climb out, a man and a woman, both young. The woman has pink and green hair, and the man's eyes are two different colors. They close the door firmly, lock it, and push a desk over it to completely secure it.

"Mitsuri, Obanai, I'm glad you made here all right!" Kocho smiles kindly at them.

"Shinobu!" the woman waves, then tackles the doctor in a hug.

"Careful!" I warn. But they both get up with no injuries.

I think that this is how they always greet each other. I look over to the man, who stands there silently, looking around the cellar. Finally, he finishes his survey and opens his mouth.

"It looks secure enough." he says.

"Yes. And we've secured all the doors and barricaded all the hallways in the house as well." Kocho explains. "We should be fine if we just hide out here."

"Yes. But if, by any chance, the zombies get inside, we should be able to protect ourselves." I say, resting a hand on the pistol fastened to my belt.

Kocho give us a sly looking grin. "We also have many highly efficient traps rigged outside the cellar door, the door of the room the entrance to the cellar is located in, and the outside of the house." she says.

"No we don't" I say dumbly.

"We do now. I set them after you all went to bed early." the doctor smirks. "Don't worry, I tested them too, they work very well. And the zombies don't have intelligence, so they should fall for them easily."

I wait for her to continue.

"If they do fall for the traps, we'll have samples to experiment on."

She really does think of everything.

A/N: Well, this was a very boring and badly written chapter, right? I'm sorry about that. I'll focus more on the next ones. Thanks for reading! :D
