The zombies should be coming soon. I knew that, but still, it was hard not to jump when we heard them pounding on the doors and walls of our house. I knew that we would most ikely be safe in here, but it was incredibly hard to focus on my research and not panic as we heard their horrible moaning.
They were people recently, with families and jobs and dreams. Now they wander as undead corpses, possessed by an unexplained impulse to spread their plague to others. I carefully peer out the one window that we have, and almost jump backwards, almost screaming, when a rotted, twisted face peers back at me, blood pouring out of one empty eye socket and the other with it's cornea filled with the white smoke of blindness.
I know it can't see me, but it's hardly to believe now, when it seems to look right at me with those unseeing eyes. That man probably had a child somewhere, still waiting for their father to come home. He would never come home.
And it's my job to make it so that we never have to fear this illness again. Shoving my feelin of disgust and pity deep down inside me, I call for the Captain.
"Captain! Can you reach outside through the window and pull this zombie inside? I need a specimen to test on." I ask, swallowing hard.
He looks at me for a second, then seems to decide he can trust me, and shoves the window open. He shoots his arm out and grabs the collar of the zombie's shirt, pulling it inside, then quickly jumps out of range as it lunges for him. I leap onto it's back and force it to the floor, staying out of reach of it's fatal bite.
"Tie it up! And be careful!" I order.
I hold out a hand to Aoi, balancing precariously on the zombie's thrashing body, trying my best to ignore the horrible feeling of its rotted flesh under my boots. Aoi tosses me a gag that we made specially for zombies. I carefully wedge it between it's jaws, and take a slow, shaky breath. It can't bite us now. I step off the body as the zombie writhes on the floor.
It's a wonder the Captain managed to get it inside without getting bitten. The Captain ties it's arms together, and Tanjiro ties it's feet.
"Good work," I say.
Deciding I'd better get to work, I inject the incompleted antidote into it's neck. The zombie's teeth begin to decay at a rapid rate and soon there's nothing left of them. So the current antidote works to make the zombies unable to spread the virus. It'll be useful for now, and thanks to this, I have a better idea of what needs to be done.
"Captain, you might want to send some of the antidote to your headquarters, to be distributed among soldiers, so we can at least start to prevent the spread of the zombie virus." I suggest. "It probably won't take me too long to figure out how to perfect the antidote. You can tell them to expect progress soon."
He nods and turns to my girls who have already begun to make more of the anitidote.
I sigh and lean against my table. I'm tired, but I have science work to do.
