I Know, You Know

Dave tosses and turns throughout the night and ends up getting up early in the morning the next day. He doesn't like waking up in random places because he almost freaks out when he finds himself in a motel room. For a second he's convinced that Menza or someone else kidnapped him and brought him here, then remembers yesterday and all that bullshit comes flooding back instead. Dave rubs the grogginess from his eyes and sits up on the side of the bed. It doesn't feel like he hasn't gotten any sleep at all and his head is pounding; most likely from drinking so much coffee the night before.

He goes through his usual daily routine, getting cleaned up and ready for the day. His bladder is so full it feels as though it might burst and sighs gratefully when he makes it to the toilet. Dave never got the chance to pack any toiletries (because he honestly didn't expect to spend a night away from home) so brushing his teeth is out of the question. But there's still a shower for him to use that isn't as filthy as he was expecting, so that's a plus. They even got little complimentary bottles of shampoo and conditioner, as well as body wash.

The bottles are so tiny though, and Dave ends up squeezing every last bit out to wash his long, unruly hair. By the time Dave steps out of the shower to dry himself off, he wishes he was home. Not only because of the obvious, but because his hair would be a mess all day, making him look just as frazzled as he feels. There's far more pressing matters to be worried about, but Dave somehow still manages to get hung up on the small things. Maybe Rob will have a brush I could burrow, Dave ponders idly as he wraps his hair in a towel.

Back in the main part of the room, Dave fishes his phone out of his jacket pocket and sits on the edge of the bed in nothing but a couple of towels. He checks to see if anyone's tried to get a hold of him over the night. Surprisingly enough, there's no new notifications, not even from Kirk. Dave makes a mental note of shooting him a text in a little bit, but right now he needs to talk to James to let him know what's going on. He scrolls through his contacts and dials James' number. The line rings out a few times before James picks up.

"Hey," James greets.

"Hey, how's everything? Is Kirk alright?" Dave asks.

"Yeah, he's doing fine. He's still sleeping right now," says James. "What's up with you, man? How's the investigation coming along?"

"Not easy. It's not much, but we might have something," Dave tells him.

Over the course of thirty minutes or so, Dave goes into detail about all the things he knows and what they've found out. He mentions talking to the people at the club, running into Kiko, and Jason's journal. James initially expresses some doubt concerning the journal, but he gets on board with the idea when Dave mentions the notes Rob took. Of course James asks questions about this Kiko guy, being naturally suspicious as any person would be, but Dave vouches for him despite still being uncomfortable about the whole arrangement.

It seems James picks up on this because he starts alluding to the possibility that Kiko is taking them further away from their goal. He poses questions like what if he's sabotaging the investigation? or what if he's the one behind it all? and so on. It makes sense, obviously. Kiko was one of the last people to see Jason before he disappeared and he seems to have exclusive access to Jason's house. He could've coerced Jason into taking the money. Kiko could be working for someone. The likelihood of that doesn't bode well with Dave and he appreciates the added paranoia even less, but he needs to be thinking about these things.

For the time being, Dave trusts Kiko. But that doesn't mean he's not keeping an eye on him at the same time. Eventually, him and James move on from that subject and talk about the main evidence they have so far.

"So you're gonna talk to Lars?" James asks.

"It's the only solid lead we got," Dave admits, massaging the bridge of his nose. "I'm putting everything on the line for this."
