"Your majesty, are you all right?" asked Captain Cullen as he ran to the queen and caught her before she hit the floor.
The queen's body got tense, her pulse speeding up, and her breathing became very shallow. Her hand was shaking as she tightened her grip on the letter in her hands from Zohar and was about to rip it into pieces. "How dare that bastard to insult me, the Queen of Aspor!" she said in gritted teeth and clenched jaw.
Captain Cullen assisted the queen back to her seat. He never saw her react that way. After she received a letter from her brother, King Rufus of Zohar, the queen burst into so much anger.
According to the letter, Zohar would withdraw their protection towards the queen and the prince if Queen Ylessea would not cooperate with Zohar. News about the king's health must have been spread to the neighboring kingdoms. It was about time according to King Rufus to take over the Kingdom of Aspor. He wanted the queen to submit under him as soon as Prince Blaine was crowned as the new king. This was planned even before, when their father was still the King of Zohar.
However, Queen Ylessea refused. She didn't want to be used over and over again, especially Blaine, in the political agenda of both Zohar and Aspor as what they did to her. They forced her to marry the King of Aspor, making her life miserable.
King Rufus was planning to assemble his army, and anytime now, they would be marching against Aspor.
"Your majesty! Your majesty!" said a guard, rushing to the throne hall. The other guards blocked him as the queen ordered not to be disturbed, but Captain Cullen mustered them to let him pass. The guard was gasping for breath the moment he knelt before Queen Ylessea, sweat all over his face as if he had run a thousand miles.
The queen cast him a blank stare, uninterested.
"State your purpose," ordered Captain Cullen.
The guard made one deep breath, then looked straight into the eyes of the queen as he spoke. "The King is dead!"
Everyone in the throne hall gasped, including Queen Ylessea who tensed even more. This shouldn't be happening. The queen thought she would have more time to prevent what was about to happen. Why would her insolent brother do this to her?! She was the one who endured everything. No one had the right to claim Aspor, but she and Prince Blaine alone.
"You need to get out of the castle now, your highness, together with the Prince before it's too late," said the guard.
"Nonsense!" shouted Cullen. "How dare you talk to the Queen in that manner?" he looked to the other guards. "Arrest this traitor!"
"Forgive me your highness, but before the King died, he appointed a new king, and it is not the Prince."
Queen Ylessea stood up, fists clenched. She glared at the guard as she could almost feel her blood boiling in her veins.
