EFFIE IS REALLY TIRED OF PEOPLE. Specifically the fact that they can't mind their own damn business. All she was doing was snogging someone in a broom cupboard. Then she has to hear a ten minute lecture about how it's "indecent" and she should be ashamed of herself. That it's not ladylike. Effie would also like to point out that the boy, Roger Selwyn, didn't get near as much of a lecture as she did.
Then the whole way to the library she got stares and whispers. Like she's the first person to get caught snogging someone. It's ridiculous. Besides it's not her fault. She told Roger that they would get caught in that broom cupboard, but he insisted.
She entered the library and flopped down in a chair with a groan.
Carson looked up from his book, "You okay?"
"No, but I will be. I just need to be dramatic for a moment," she replied and then groaned again. He just chuckled. Carson Wilson is a muggle-born Hufflepuff in her year. They became friends in their second year when they were both in the library studying for exams and there weren't any empty tables. Regulus wasn't very happy about him being muggle-born and kept his distance for awhile, but he eventually warmed up to him. Effie may have told him to quit being a twat, but that's besides the point. He has to have an excuse that he tells his family so he doesn't get disowned for it which sucks.
Speaking of Regulus he walked up to the table and gracefully sat down in that way that only "The Most Noble and Ancient House of Black" can.
He looked around for a second before he leaned in and said, "Roger Selwyn," he crinkled his nose, "Really?"
"What's wrong with that?"
Regulus gave her a look, "This is the same person who tried to charm his hair to look like James Potter's and set it on fire."
"I never said he was smart,"
Carson cut in, "Wait what happened?"
"Effie here, was caught with Roger Selwyn im a broom cupboard."
"Effie!"
"What? He's not a bad snogger," she shrugged.
Carson thought for a moment before saying, "He's not bad on the eyes either."
Effie started laughing, "No he's not." She sat there with her eyes closed while Regulus helped Carson with his homework. Effie learned very quickly when she met Regulus on the train that Regulus was a fucking genius. She's not exaggerating either. He spends a lot of times studying runes and different spells and him and Severus try to make their own. It doesn't always turn out too well, but it's more than Effie can do, so she's not going to judge.
Her brother frustrates Effie a lot. He spends so much time mooning after Lily Evans that he can't see that they're not good for each other. They are losing the things that they have in common and it seems like, from Effie's point of view at least, that Lily is looking for a reason to end the friendship. Lily doesn't agree with Sev's fascination with the dark arts and her friends keep telling her things that Effie can tell it's not going to turn out well. Effie doesn't think Severus will handle it well if the friendship ends. Lily was the first person to show him kindness and he latched on to that. Now he has this unhealthy codependency and obsession with her that's doomed. And yes it's probably for the best that Lily gets away, but Sev is her brother and Effie does not appreciate him getting hurt. He can't see what's happening and it's going to hurt him so much more and nothing Effie does can stop it.
Effie reaches into her bag and gets out a piece of parchment. She steals Regulus' ink and quill that's just sitting there and ignores his "Hey!".
Dear Lenny, How are you doing? Sorry I haven't wrote to you in a while school has been so hectic. I miss you. I wish you could come to school here, but yes I know. I can hear you saying it already, "Everything is the way it is for a reason." That doesn't mean I have to like it. I miss my best friend. We only have a little while to go before summer break! And then we can go to the old abandoned house on High Street and listen to the Beatles on that record play.
"Hey are you writing to Lenny?" Carson asked suddenly
"Yep."
"Tell him I said hi!" Carson met Lenny a couple times over the summer when he came to visit Effie. They seem to like each other which Effie wasn't really expecting. Not that she's not happy it's just that she always thought that the muggle and magical parts of her life were going to stay separate.
Carson says hi, by the way. I'm not sure if I ever mentioned this but I'm glad you two are friends. It's nice. Anyway I have to go. I love and miss you. Love, Effie
"Hey I'm going to go owl this," They nodded at her and so she grabbed her bag and left. On her way there she ran into Lacey who asked where her brother was. She needed help with potions or something.
Effie likes Lacey a lot. A lot better once Effie learned to stop comparing herself to her. Lacey sometimes reminds Effie of an older sibling. Or a mom. She always wants everyone to do their best and take care of themselves. And after growing up without that it's nice to have. Effie knows Sev feels the same way though he'd never admit it.
Their house isn't the greatest. Their father is an alcoholic who takes his anger out on his family. Well, Effie should say Severus' father. Tobias is not Effie's father. Effie doesn't know who her father is. After Severus was born Tobias found out about magic and he didn't take it very well. He left and their mother, Eileen, was distraught. Somehow she ended up in bed with a man and got pregnant with Effie. And then Tobias came back and that's all she wrote. That's about all the specific Eileen will go into the story. And good luck getting anything out of Tobias. The most he'll say is that Effie took Eileen's name because he wasn't having some bitch with his last name. It's bad enough that he's got a freak for a son with his name.
Effie made it to the owlery and sent the letter. She remembers fondly of when she first sent Lenny a letter. She was afraid that, being a muggle, he'd get scared and freak out. But no. He just marveled at the fact that these owls could fly all across the world and find the person to deliver the letter to. He then begged his parents for an owl, but alas they said no.
She sat on the ground and waited for his reply. Breathing in the spring weather.
