Jade"Tell me about your sister," she suggested as she curled up into his side, head on his chest as his fingers ran through her hair. "If you want to."
She heard him faintly sigh, and she kissed his collarbone in reassurance.
"She would've liked you," he chuckled softly, still stroking her blonde curls. "Her name was Rebecca, but she went by Becca a lot. She was two years younger than me. She was pretty. Brown hair, brown eyes. We were basically twins. She had a snippy attitude, though. But sweet at the same time. You two would've gotten along."
She snuggled into his chest. "I wish I would've gotten to meet her."
"Me too."
"Can I ask what happened to her?"
"She died of cancer a year ago," he explained solemnly. "I didn't even know she had it until she passed away."
"I'm sorry," she murmured as she kissed his cheek, soothing him a bit.
"It's okay," he replied as he pressed a kiss to her hair. "She's somewhere better now. Do you wanna tell me about your mom?"
She tensed in his arms, and he looked down at her with concern.
"You don't have to," he reassured her quickly. "Just asking."
"It's only fair," she sighed. "You told me about your sister."
"Only if you want to."
"When I was fifteen," she started, sighing shakily. "I was trying to earn my driver's license, so I asked my mom if she could let me drive around for a bit. She agreed, and we both got into the car, and I started driving. It was going smoothly at first, until I didn't realize a truck was driving our way, and my mom screamed as I tried to skid out of the way.
"And we both were screaming until I slammed into a tree, and I looked over at my mom, but her eyes were closed. I thought she had just passed out at first. But then I checked her pulse, and realized that she wasn't breathing, and I panicked."
She let out a shaky breath, and Beck tightened his arms around her, resting his chin on her head.
"I called nine-one-one, and they came after about twenty minutes or so, and I was terrified. They took mom away on a stretcher, only to tell me that she passed away moments later. When my dad found out, he called me a murderer. He started hitting me and refusing to give me much food, barely any water. He hated me, ever since my mother died."
"I'm so sorry, angel," Beck said gently, rubbing small circles onto her back soothingly. "But none of that was your fault. You know that, right?"
"It is my fault," she whispered. "It's all my fault. If it weren't for me, she would still be alive right now. But she's not. I killed her."
"No, look at me right now." He lifted her chin up with a finger so she could look at him. "It is not your fault. You did not kill her. You didn't know their was gonna be a crash. You didn't know anything was gonna happen. Its not your fault, okay?"
She didn't feel like arguing at the moment, so she just nodded and cuddled more into his safe embrace.
"I love you," she whispered before she fell asleep.
He kissed her head. "And I love you, angel."
