A Lil' Vocab Lesson (+Theory about Ramshackle Dorm)

Ramshackle/Onboro both have similar definitions. The only reason I know about the Onboro one is that I have a Japanese-English dictionary, and we can also determine how that details for the story of the dorm itself.

So let's start with the word Onboro, shall we?

おんぼろ is a Japanese adjective used with の after it. The meaning of it in the dictionary I have is worn-out and tattered. So オンボロ寮 (Onboro-Ryo) means worn-out/tattered dorm.

Now let's use the word Ramshackle (I just looked up Ramshackle definition on google to find the meaning).

According to Google, the word Ramshackle means something in an intense state of disrepair, mainly used for houses or vehicles. Therefore, we can infer that Ramshackle has been abandoned for years, even decades.

Time for a little theory. It takes years for a building to be in such a state of disrepair that it would be better to completely demolish it then rebuild it.

There's also the fact that the dorm's name could be, in fact, not the actual name of the dorm. For a dorm to be so abandoned and in such disrepair to gain that nickname, which is used instead of the actual name that was never mentioned, we can theorise that Ramshackle Dorm has been abandoned for long enough to likely have no living people who were in that dorm when they were at NRC. If there are, however, they transferred dorms quickly.

My theory on this? Ramshackle has been abandoned for 20+ years, perhaps even longer (50 years or more). We don't have much in terms of canon knowledge about Ramshackle Dorm yet, and there's a chance we might find out in the Diasomnia chapter (which might come out around mid to late 2021, since Pomefiore's chapter hasn't been released by the time I'm publishing this) or the Ignihyde chapter.
