"Giselle!" Mom called from underneath the stairs. "Come and see what Dani bought us!"
"Us?" I yelled back, questioning.
Dani went grocery shopping once in a while, but she didn't buy presents unless it was a day like Christmas, especially not for me. I was almost as curious as I was annoyed, as I was preparing for the prom tonight.
We didn't go for dinner with a group of friends because it was almost impossible to organize on a short term with so many people. We promised to go to some fancy restaurant in front of the prom at the end of year.
So with make-up on one side of my face and eyeliner still in my hand, I waddled down the stairs to our living room. There was a box in the middle of the room, which Ty was sitting next to, popping the bubbles of the protective plastic layer. Behind my mother stood something that I couldn't yet see. I walked closer and then stopped in astonishment. What the hell. Why did Danielle buy a freaking vacuum cleaner? She was definitely insane.
"Did I just come downstairs for a fcking vacuum cleaner?"
"I don't want you to use such language in this house, you hear me?" Mom snorted angrily.
"But why? Why did Dani buy this?"
"The old one has been broken for a while and we're a little short on money because of the new house as you know, so I hadn't bought a new one. Dani used her savings to help us all. Don't you think that's wonderful? Thank you so much Dani!" After that she hugged my sister.
I turned my back on them and started walking back to the bathroom.
"You'd better use that vacuum cleaner as well sometimes, Giselle!" mom called after me.
No way I was going to touch that stupid thing. If Dani found cleaning and "helping this family" so important, than why not let her do so. It was none of my business. What was wrong with Danielle, seriously! She's so... abnormal. Such a pi, really.
I hurried to get ready and of course everything went wrong. I accidently splashed water on my face resulting in ruined foundation. So when the bell rang, I was still pissed off but rushed to the door anyway.
Just at the sight of Vince, my cloudy mood cleared up. "Hey, come in for a moment, I'm almost ready."
Vince stepped inside the house and looked around the hall.
"Who's there Giselle?" I heard my mother ask from the kitchen.
Vince gave me a look as if to ask whether I hadn't told my mother he'd be coming. I shrugged and didn't answer my mom's question. I didn't want to let Vince wait too long. I changed into my prom dress and checked in the mirror if it still fitted me well - you never know. Statisfied, I put on my pumps and made it down the stairs.
As I came down, I saw Vince's smile widen. He couldn't have possibly looked happier, which made me at least equally happy. I assume my mother heard me entering the hall, because she came to wave me goodbye.
When she discovered Vince, she became over-enthusiastic. "OMG, Giselle! Is he your boyfriend? He sure is handsome. Hello, young man, nice to meet you, I'm Giselle's mother. Pleasure to meet you. Why haven't you told me about him, Giselle?"
"Mom, please, we've got to go now. His dad will bring me home, okay? See you!" Without another word, I let Vince take my hand and walked out the door.
"What's between you and your mom?" Vince asked as soon as we were outside.
"I don't know, actually. It's just that she always seems to compare me to my older sister who's amazing in her eyes. I think she's rather dull. We never do things together and she's strange and- whatever. Never mind."
