"I see 42 stars on my side! How many do you see on yours?" Marie exclaims.
"Uh... 51," Callie replies.
"So that's..." Marie trails off.
"103!" Callie exclaims.
"No. It's 93," Marie says.
The two girls sit on a dock, a lake below them, looking at the stars in the sky. The bright lights of Inkopolis behind them, they take sides, counting each one they can see.
"Marie?" Callie asks.
"Yeah?"
"Promise we'll be together forever, okay?" Callie says.
Marie nods.
"I promise."
A shooting star soars above their head.
"Ooh! Make a wish!" Callie exclaims.
"I wish that we win the folk-singing contest tomorrow," Marie says.
"I wish that nothing will ever seperate us," Callie says.
They hold hands and begin to sing.
"Chopperipo shurashurafe... nannyuruni renifaferahi. Nannyuruni weranira shuraharahi. Nyurunirehara fe fe fe!"
The wind seems to whistle along with the song they're singing.
Callie blows her loose tentacle out of her face as another shooting star comes by.
Its tail lights up the night sky, and a few more stars are briefly visible.
"94, 95, 96, 97, 98!" Callie counts.
"Do you think we'll have time to stop and see the Plaza when we go to Inkopolis tomorrow?" Callie asks.
"Hopefully. I wanna see the idols. One day, you and I are gonna sit in that box," Marie says.
"That would be so cool... standing on the trucks, watching as fireworks go BOOM! and we're singing our very own songs..." Callie says.
"I want to become a household name. I want the world to see us and think, 'Yeah, those are the freshest idols yet, Callie and Marie.' And we'll do it all together... nothing will ever bring us apart!" Marie exclaims.
"Yeah! I have an idea for a song. It goes, 'Megeparapi gera weriweriweriweri bora. Megeparacho gera merimerimerimeri nyu!'" Callie exclaims, not realizing she recited the lyrics of the very song that would drive the two of them apart.
"Or what about 'Moranife teyuruni merikeraninshu... rattinsha uyuruni... meremerenu?'" Marie asks, doing the same.
"Yeah! We could combine them into one amazing song! Like, bada na na na na naaaaaaaaaaaa," Callie says excitedly.
"Yeah. We could call it 'Callie and Marie are Awesome- The Song!'" Marie jokes.
"But we'll do it together. I never want to sing without you," Callie says.
--
"When we were kids, Callie and I would count the stars together at night," I recall to Agent 4.
Things sure have changed in only about 10 years... I promised I would never leave her side... and now she's gone.
