6 - Sorry, Ryan

*Five*

Five sat on his windowsill overlooking the busy street. He turned to his watch; it was 4:10pm. Vanya should be home anytime now. He always waited for her to come home, ever since their father made her go to a new, normal high school. Five and his other siblings were of course home schooled by Pogo and Grace, their father didn't want them to mix with the 'ordinary' children.

4:11pm. He heard footsteps from afar and his head shot up. He saw her walking down the street, her pace relaxed and a laugh escaping her mouth. What was she laughing about?

Five's brows furrowed as another boy caught up to her, nudging her shoulder while laughing along. He narrowed his gaze as they walked to the Academy together, Vanya letting him in through the front door.

Five jumped to the living room, setting himself on one of the sofas and pretending to read a newspaper while Vanya and the boy came in.

"Oh hi, Pogo!" He heard her voice call from the entrance hall. "This is Ryan, we're working on an assignment together." Pogo answered something in return and soon, the two came into the living room, school bags slung over their shoulders.

Five didn't look up, he was after all very busy reading the news.

"Five!" His eyes shot up, mock surprise showing as he 'realised' Vanya was there. "How was your day?" She smiled softly at him, and the fact that another boy was sitting next to her on the sofa didn't bother him nearly as much anymore.

But that was ruined when the smelly boy interrupted them. "Wow! You're the Five?" Five had a hard time registering the boy's question because all his senses were blocked by that horrid cologne he wore.

He shook it off and jumped to the bar, pouring himself a large cup of coffee. Maybe it would calm the growing irritation.

"I'll take that as a yes..." Ryan muttered nervously, glancing anxiously towards the girl sitting next to him.

"Five, this is Ryan, Ryan, Five." She introduced the two boys, a large grin on her face. The two shook hands, and Ryan let out a tiny squeak as Five tightened his grip for just a moment.

"Pleasure." He let go and fell back into the sofa, his newspaper long forgotten and now replaced with the mug of coffee. "So...what's he doing here?" he asked, feigning interest in the lad but mentally cursing him out.

Vanya began unpacking her schoolbag, pulling out different books about the Great War. "History assignment. The teacher partnered us together and I offered we do it at my place."

She started flipping pages. Her pen was stuck between her teeth as she nibbled on it, a nasty habit of hers she often wanted to get rid of if only it didn't help her concentrate. Ryan scooted closer just the slightest bit and heat rose up to Five's cheeks.

Maybe he needed to stay in the living room, just to check if everything was alright.

He was still here. In the two hours that had passed, Ryan had come impossibly closer to Vanya on the sofa while she just stayed in her spot as if not even noticing him there.

Five had seen his evident stares and concluded he didn't like him. The boy had even brushed his hand against hers, which made Five's stomach churn in anger. He wasn't even sure what caused these reactions, but he blamed Ryan. Something just didn't sit right with him.
