reconnection

chapter 2

katniss pov:
i felt so safe in peetas arms like no one can hurt me. soon enough he pulls me closer and plays with my long brown hair and whispers comforting things in my ear like 'it's okay katniss, she's safe now.' that helps me a lot hearing him say those things, but what doesn't help is that i know she's gone and never coming back. peeta unwraps his arms from me and began walking towards the front door to my house gesturing me to follow him. i'm kinda sad that the hug ended because i liked being in his warmth and i liked when he played with my hair it calms me. i walk inside with peeta right behind me. i slowly walk towards the couch sitting down in a curled up ball. now was time to let out all my bottled up emotions.

i cried for hours with peeta beside me the whole time, holding me into his chest and playing with my hair. momentarily i fell asleep in his arms. he must have noticed because he carried me upstairs to bed placing me down lightly so he doesn't wake me. i felt him kiss the top of my head lightly and my eyes flutter open. "goodnight katniss" he says walking out of the room "peeta wait!" i cry he turns around "will you stay with me?" i ask. peeta lets out a breath of relief then climbs into bed next to me. i lay down on his chest with his strong arms wrapped around me, "always" i hear him say softly. i smile and curl up closer to him and fall asleep from listening to the lullaby of his heartbeat.

i wake up expecting to have peeta next to me but when i reach for him i noticed he wasn't there. was i just dreaming of him? no it wasn't a dream was it? i sit up right and rub my eyes, i hear shuffling around in the kitchen and i then basically jump out of bed and ran down the stairs. but when i saw who was in the kitchen i just smiled. "good morning katniss" peeta said "good morning" i say back. i look through the transparent oven door and see that peeta is making cheese buns. "peeta you didn't have to do this" i say "no it's okay i thought you would be hungry" he says awkwardly scratching the back of his neck. things have never been awkward between us, so i decided to do something to clear this up. i walked up to him wrapped my arms around his neck then gently placed a soft kiss on his lips. he was surprised a little but then eventually his arms went around my waist and he kissed back. i felt my stomach turn as if we were doing this for the first time. i pulled back and smiled "sorry" i say "i just had to make things less awkward." "it's okay" he says back smiling. "we better get these cheese buns out of the oven before they burn" peeta says while getting them out of the oven, i giggle.

after we finished eating i sat on the couch for a bit while peeta went home to shower. i decided to go for a walk so i can show peeta the beautiful sunset i watched the other night. i knocked on his door lightly and as if he was expecting me he surprisingly opens the door straight away. "wanna go for a walk?" i ask "i want to show you something" peeta nods and shuts his front door after walking out of it. after what feels like ages we finally arrive at the meadow. i sit down at the same oak tree as last time, and peeta sits beside me. we sit and chatter for a while until the moment comes. the sun is starting to set and my gosh is it beautiful tonight. "wow" peeta says while gasping, "i know it's beautiful" i say smiling ear to ear. "you wanna know what's more beautiful?" peeta asks. "what?" i say lightly blushing from knowing what he's gonna say next, "you." yep that's the answer i was expecting. i layed my head down on his shoulder and closed my eyes wishing to freeze this moment and live in it forever.
