"Oh no, don't worry about it Mrs. Zen, I don't mind meeting with Kara," Mrs. Nox's says, her voice faint from the other side of the line.
"Are you sure?" my mother asks as she looks over at me.
I hunch down further on the barstool, in all honesty, Indigo and I hadn't meant to go on such a long walk after breakfast, but we just couldn't help ourselves. It had been ages since we've been able to really let loose for once and we had visited all of our old places we liked to go to when we were both still in high school and even middle school as we had even ended up eating lunch.
It came as a surprise to the both of us when we had realized that it was nearly six o clock in the evening.
"Oh I'm sure, go ahead and bring her by," Mrs. Nox's voice replies in her normal, cheery tone. "I'm just catching up on paperwork."
"All right, I'll be by with her shortly," my mother says before she hangs up the phone and looks at me. "Kara."
I look away then, unable to meet her eyes.
"Look at me."
After a few moments, I do. I expect anger but all I see is fear in her eyes as she watches me for a long moment before she sighs.
"The least you could have done was text me," she replies in a low voice.
"I know, and I'm sorry I forgot my phone," I start to say, but she cuts me off with a wave of her hand.
"It doesn't matter now, I don't want to keep your therapist waiting, so we need to get moving," she says as she starts walking for the door, the keys for the car jingling in her hand.
I silently trail after her as she unlocks the car and gets in and I follow suit. The drive over is quiet, as nothing but the dull rumble of the car's engine fills our trip. We pull up to the familiar building where Mrs. Nox's office is housed, the headlights of the car casting over the dark exterior, as the sun has already begun to set.
My mother pulls out her phone to check it for a moment before she nods to me.
"Message Indigo when you're done, she'll come and pick you up, something came up at work and I probably won't be able to come by," she says in a low voice before she reaches over to squeeze my shoulder, "I love you."
"I love you too," I murmur before I get out of the car and shut the door behind me.
I navigate the long familiar hallway alone, the wood floor creaking under my feet as I pass the other offices in the building, their doors shut and their lights out. I knock on Mrs. Nox's door at the end of the hall and it swings open.
"Come in," she calls from inside.
I walk in and settle into the familiar green and mahogany chair in the middle of her office, as she is still sitting at her desk. She glances at me from overtop of her glasses and smiles to show her teeth, which are white against the deep maroon shade of lipstick she has on.
"Just finishing up with a few forms," she promises me.
"That's fine," I reply as I listen to her tip-tap at her computer.
There's no music playing as I note how quiet her office is without it. My phone vibrates and I check to see that there's a text from Shawn.
"Would you like to maybe go see a movie with me around 7?"
I can't help but smile at the text, "7 probably won't work, I have an appointment with my therapist, I'll try to text you around 8?"
"Sounds good :)."
I take a breath to steady myself when I hear Mrs. Nox finish up her typing before she starts over towards me. She clicks on a lamp by her chair before she sits down across from me.
She's still dressed in an immaculate blouse and slacks as she crosses her legs and clicks her pen as she props her notebook up in her lap and smiles at me. Her ginger hair has been pulled up into a neat knot that is pinned on the back of her head with silver clips as her green eyes survey me.
"How are you feeling today, Kara?"
I hesitate as I choose to look around the room instead, not wanting to talk about everything that is currently plaguing me.
Something catches my eye then and my heart stumbles to a stop.
I blink several times, not quite able to put the pieces together for a moment as I stare across the room.
Unable to think. Unable to feel.
It's something I really hadn't noticed before as it glitters in the light of the lamp. Propped up on a book shelf in the corner of the room is a large, blue cat statue.
A statue that is made of glass.
'Glass cat' 'get out' 'help'.
I stagger to my feet, my heart in my head as the hair prickles on my arms. Mrs. Nox eyes me from overtop of her glasses, her gaze unreadable. A smile twitches across her lips as she jots something down in her notebook.
"Is there something wrong Kara?"
I snap a defensive ward into place as I lunge for the door.
But it's like a metal rake has been dragged across a chalkboard and I pull up short to clamp my hands over my ears. It's not a sound, it's almost a feeling, like something inside of my head has been damaged as my ears ring and my head throbs to the point that I'm afraid to move or my brain will explode.
"Oh Kara, if you think it's going to be that easy to get away from me then I truly believe you're not as smart as I thought you were," Mrs. Nox murmurs as she clicks her pen.
I can feel it then, every bit of my control being snatched from me as the breath leaves my lungs and I fall to the ground. Mrs. Nox's nude Chanel heels softly pad across the carpet to where I'm lying motionless, unable to move or feel anything as I stare her heels down.
"That's better, but I'm going to have to ask you to close your eyes for now, Kara."
Against my will, my eyes close and I'm left in blackness.
