22 | Long-Distance Enemy Scouting Formation

'The Support Team will back us up 'til we get past the abandoned village...' (Y/N) reassured herself, observing her surroundings with a cautious eye as she left the battle happening behind her. 'After that... We'll organize into a giant formation to protect ourselves from the titans.'

Erwin finally gave a signal for everyone to organize into the said formation. He raised his right hand, before spreading it to the side with his blade in hand. "Long-distance enemy scouting formation! Deploy!" he ordered, going forward as everyone slowly moved to their assigned locations. Last silent goodbyes were being said, since this easily could've been the last time seeing each other alive. All the squads would be going alone from now on.

Thinking back to the first time the new members of the Survey Corps were introduced to the current expedition, (Y/N) followed the course. She felt like a lost puppy outside the Walls, since being in charge of the spare horses made it so that she had been stationed alone. Although she had been introduced to the squads positioned near her in case of an emergency, it was different than having a loyal squad around you the entire expedition. Being alone was scary enough, but just the thought of being met with a titan alone outside the Wall was so much scarier. Besides, she was slowly starting to doubt her skills of keeping her pace with the plan.

She was aware of the arrangements, for the most part, thanks to Squad Leader Ness who was the one to teach them about the expeditions in Survey Corps.

"This is the plan Commander Erwin devised. Thanks to this formation, our survival rate has risen dramatically. You new recruits have one month to learn this "long-distance enemy scouting formation" backwards and forwards.

"Soldiers are spread out over a long distance with a semicircular formation in front, but you're spaced out evenly to ensure you can see in all directions. As much as possible, spread out enemy scouting, communications and the perimeter. You new recruits will be right here in between The Wagon Support Team and The Scouting Support Team. You'll be in charge of communications and keeping pace with the spare horses."

(Y/N) looked into the distance as the last squad visible galloped into the horizon. Taking deep breaths as she turned her gaze back forward, she tied the spare horse's reins once again around her wrist for a firmer grip.

"Primarily, it's the enemy Scouts in the first column who come into contact with the titans. Whenever they come across a titan, they'll fire off a red flare. When you see a flare, you fire off your own to pass on the warning."

Looking into the distance to her right, the girl gasped as a bright red line shot up to the sky only a few seconds after the formation had been in position. (Y/N) was quick to take action, taking out the gun and placing the red ammo inside it. Pointing it up to the sky as she covered her ears, she pulled the trigger.

"This way, Commander Erwin, who leads from the front, will know the titan's position as quickly as possible. Then, the Commander will fire off a green flare. The signal means the entire camp is altering its course and heading in a new direction. To inform the whole formation of the direction, everyone fires off a green flare towards the new course."

In a matter of seconds, a green flare shot up to the sky from somewhere at the front of the formation. It was pointed slightly to the left, which marked the new direction for the formation. Pulling the spare horse after her, (Y/N) followed the green flare as she shot up the required green flare to the same direction.
