3 weeks later
Yuna
My weeks had fallen into a quiet routine—sleep, eat, find shelter, avoid other rogues, repeat. It sounded easy enough, but life in the wild was far from simple. Packs like Dark Claw and Strong Jollis ruled the land, their territories dangerous to rogues like me. If I wandered into their domain, I’d be hunted down or worse, tortured.
The wind howled as I searched for food, my stomach a constant reminder of my hunger. Today, I caught the scent of a wounded deer rare in the winter months. The hunt was on. I crept closer, muscles tensed, but as I neared my prey, the unmistakable scent of another pack hit me.
Damn it.
I could feel the weight of the decision pressing on me. If I didn’t eat, I’d starve. If I stayed too long on their land, I’d die. Hungry and desperate, I moved in for the kill, but a snapped twig betrayed me. The deer bolted, and I lost it in the blinding snow.
Now I was lost in unfamiliar territory, with the scent of wolves closing in on me. I ran, heart pounding, but the wind was my enemy. My legs burned, and then, just as the wolves closed in, I was tackled to the ground.
A low growl rumbled from the wolf on top of me. "Who are you, rogue?"
I couldn’t move, couldn’t escape. Three wolves circled, their eyes cold and unforgiving. The alpha stepped forward, his gaze intense. "Shift."
I hesitated, but the power in his voice left me no choice. Reluctantly, I shifted, exposed and vulnerable in front of them.
The younger wolf's eyes locked onto mine, a strange pull in the air. "Mine," he growled, and my heart skipped.
My fate had changed, but at what cost?
