It had been about a week since I had met Toren, and work had been pretty good.
I was heading on my way to go check on the synthesizer. Toren has asked me to keep an eye on it since he was so busy preparing for the festival.
I was walking through the hallway, just about to enter the lab when I heard something. Jason, my brother, lecturing Toren.
"The speaker isn't coming?"Jason said, stressed," now what Toren?"
Toren gulped and took a deep breath, he said," I'll think of something,"
"What do you mean, think of something!" Jason replied," You know the presentations tomorrow! You could have just asked us too.."
"I'll be alright!" Toren said, trying to get Jason to go away." I'll figure something out, don't worry"
Jason sighed and look at Toren," we need this to continue our research," he said,"You of all people should know how important that is Toren! We're counting on you."
Jason finally left, and Toren breathed a sigh of relief. I took this as clear to enter the hall.
"Toren are you alright? Looks like you got chewed out pretty badly back there," I asked.
His expression softened when he looked at me.
"We were supposed to have a speaker talk at the convention instead of me, with my social anxiety and all. But they called in sick, and the convention is tomorrow," he said.
I paused for a second thinking, and then an idea came to me.
"I could speak for you! I am your assistant, isn't helping you what I'm supposed to do?" I asked.
He smiled, but clearly wasn't gonna say yes.
"I'm sorry, but your busy all day tomorrow with you own work. I wouldn't wanna put this onto you on top of that," he replied.
"It wouldn't be that hard, I'm only looking after the lab for a day. I think Chansey or someone else could fill in for me for an hour," I said.
He laughed and looked at me skeptical.
"And who would fill in for you, I'm sorry but Chansey doesn't seem like a good idea." He said.
"We could get one of the interns to do it, I would even pay them more out of my own pocket," I replied.
He shook his head and was finally grinning, he wasn't taking me seriously.
"Oh ca-mon, please!" I asked, going to my last resort, puppy dog eyes.
The weird thing is that I seemed to catch him off guard, and a faint blush spread on his cheeks. I didn't know what that meant, but it was odd nonetheless.
He regained his composure and looked at me sternly.
" Y/N," he said, taking a deep breathe,"
The answer is no, sorry,""Pleeeeeaaaaase!" I said.
He sighed and patted me on the head, gave me a smile, and sighed.
"Sorry no, now stop it," he said.
"When did you get so brave and stern..." I said, pouting in defeat.
He blushed and started stuttering for the first time in a while.
I couldn't stop laughing.
"You are such a dork," I said teasing, he was a dork, a cute dork.
I sighed and shrugged," Alright, you win," I said.
He looked at me strangely, and shrugged, then walked off. He still looked pretty shaken up though, I knew I had to do something to help. If I couldn't do the speech for him, than I would have to find some smaller way to help out.
