I scattered to grab my bag and pick up the Orange juice sitting on the counter. I gulped it down in one go and threw the plastic cup in the sink. If I don't leave now I'll be late. Late. Late. Late.
I sped down the stairs two at a time, praying my short legs could keep up. After a few tiny trips I reached the bottom of the staircase and pulled the loose hair out of my face. I rushed towards my small, pink car and slid into the drivers seat.
Zooming down the road, I turned sharply at the corners. I avoided the traffic jams and took the shortcuts, wincing every time I almost hit a sign or a person but not at all attempting to slow down. I had to admit, I wasn't the best driver in New York.
I turned the radio down so I could focus on the right side of the road. Basically so I could stay put, without harming anyone. It was about a fifteen minute drive, and my goal was to shorten it to about five. At the speed i was going, at 8:30 in the morning, i think i could probably accomplish that goal.
Leaves swayed around in the air as I sped past and a smile crept on my face as i spotted Angie placing a blackboard sign out the front of the cafe. I quickly parked my car, hoping i wouldn't get a ticket for the dodgy job and ran in. 'I'm here!' I yelled and i recieved some stares off customers enjoying their once peaceful coffee.
I ignored that and threw my apron on quickly then facing my back to Angie so she could tie it up for me. I sat my hat on my head and immediately began making the orders i spotted on the ticket holder. I placed the milk in the machine and sat back, waiting for it to heat up. 'Morning Dawn,' Angie smiled after she placed another piece of scribbled on paper on the strip above my head.
'Morning Angel face,' I smirked at her and continued on, covering the takeaway coffee with a lid and placing it on the serving bench. 'Chris Brown?' I asked holding in a laugh as a teenage boy jogged up and grabbed the cup. His friends roared in laughter and he was clearly embarrassed. I turned to face Angie and frowned, 'Seriously?' I asked. 'That's the third celebrity we've served this week.' I said with finger quotes on the word celebrity.
Angie laughed with her hands resting on her waist. 'That's what we get for giving them the option of picking a name,' she shrugged and took the order from a tall man. 'I guess so.' 'Oh!' I yelled a bit too loud. 'What do you want for your birthday next week?' I asked remembering suddenly.
'Oh sweety, let me think.' She said placing a finger on her rounded chin. 'Nothing,' she replied blankly. She does this every damn time, but I don't go down without a fight.
'Angie, Angie, Angie,' I shook my head in disappointment. 'I'm giving you something, it's just your choice if you pick or not.' I told her smirking at what I just said.
You go me.
'Dawn, you can barely pay your rent,' she whispered in hope not to embarrass me. But truth was, I wasn't embarrassed. Yeah, I could barely afford my rent. Sometimes I go weeks without using electricity. I'm still young, and I believe you have to earn everything you get. So, you can say I was pretty proud for making it this long.
'This is the face,' I circled around my pale skin. 'Of me not caring, now what do you want?' I asked her again, making my voice stern. She sighed in defeat before carrying on. 'Their were these really cute gypsy pants at forever 21.'
'Consider it done,' I smiled and prayed they wouldn't be more then $20:00. Angie had been through a lot for me, so a present once a year is the least I can do.
'Thank you,' she hugged me and all I could feel was her baby belly against me. I giggled at that and hugged her back.
She turned her body to take the order from a man, who looked around 25. Angie was 24, and I found it horrible that she was by herself in this situation.
