JUNE 21, 1962
11:47 am.

the next day had seemed to be long for the girl. she turned from her door as she jumped off over her steps onto the hard concrete. she took a deep breathe in and spun around, loving the fresh air.

"it's so pretty today." she sighed to herself.

that day her mother told her to look around and get a notice of the neighbourhood. she didn't think twice to oblige, hence why she was outside.

the blonde walked and walked, looking at every view, every tree, every colorful home, and every bug she had seen. she wouldn't hurt them of course, she couldn't even hurt a fly. her attention was stuck on the small roly-poly in her hands, until, she heard a crowd of giggles just up ahead of her.

"bye, fillis." she said to the small bug, placing him in the grass.

she sighed as she watched it crawl back into its home near a tree. the giggling continued and with her imagination and wondering personality, she followed it. as she reached the sight of the noises her eyes beamed.

she let out a small 'wow' under her breathe as she saw a sandlot. the sandlot wasn't empty however, it was filled with a bunch of boys, all different heights. she watched as they played before walking inside the gate. she watched a, small strawberry-blonde boy hold a baseball in his hand.

"come on! throw it!" one boy said.

"come on, toss me the ball — come on come on!"

the boy slowly lifted his arm, his hand shaking. he could practically feel his heart beating out of his chest. the boys still shouted as he prepared himself for the throw and-

"oh, my GOD!" another boy started. "did you see that hand?"

frankie couldn't help but feel bad for the boy. all he wanted was some fun and before he knew it he was humiliating himself. the boys continued to laugh as he ran off, except for one in particular.

he had dark hair and olive skin. the hat he wore looked brand new, and barely worn. she watched as his gaze caught the boy running. he couldn't help but feel bad for him as well.

frankie couldn't take how mean they were being. she built up her courage, hoping none of the boys would notice her. before she knew it, she was walking over to them.

"that wasn't very nice of you guys." she said.

suddenly they all turned to meet her face. she held her breathe before they spoke up. she hated being mean.

"what did you say?" a short, chubby, red head boy said, looking up at her.

"maybe erm, you could have been a little nicer to him, thats all."

"he's a loser!" one boy, who was rather short and wore glasses said, starting them all up.

"guys, guys, come on, be nice to the girl." the dark haired boy said.

"benny, she's standing up for a loser, c'mon man!" he continued.

"he's not a loser, you hardly know his poor soul." frankie replied.

"she talks like a grandma." the red head said.

a frown formed onto her face.

"goldilocks is right, you guys."

"it's frankie, sorry, i didn't introduce myself correctly." she said holding her hand out for the dark haired boy to shake.

he shook her hand, and she felt better.

"benny." he replied to her.

"well nice to meet you, benny." she started. "erm. i have to get going, but you may not know the boy, just give him a chance, please he seemed really upset."

and with that she was off and going home, leaving them all shocked, but most of all, benny.

her low top doc martens hit her front steps before she pushed her door open.

"mom, i'm home."

"dinners finished, eat up then go get freshened up for the night." her mother demanded.

"yes ma'am." she replied.

that night seemed to be the same as always for frankie, eat, clean up, go to bed. although it was slightly different for the boy she had seen at the sandlot before he ran away.

***

the boy heard a knock on his door as he climbed into bed. he turned his attention to it.

"night hon." his mother said to him, before grunting as she stepped on something.

"oh, i'm sorry, mom. it was an accident."

she nodded. his mother didn't hesitate to start with the questions.

"scotty, have you made any friends yet?" she asked.

"— no."

"— why not, honey?"

"'cause i'm still new."

"i don't want you sitting around in here all summer fiddling with stuff ... like you did last summer, and the one before." she began. "i know you're smart, and i'm proud of you. i want you to get out into the fresh air and make some friends. run around, scrape your knees, get dirty, climb trees, hop fences."

scotty sighed. he felt humiliated and all he could do was think of the past events of that day.

"get into trouble, for crying out loud. not too much, but some. you have my permission."

the rest of that night scotty and his mother talked about making friends and going outside. as she left his room she placed a kiss on his head and shut the door. and with that his thoughts took him to sleep, just as they took frankie as well.
