~Four Months Later~
I will always remember where we were when the announcement crackled through the loudspeaker. It was the day of recognition. We had just completed the ceremony in which we were finally recognized as people by the very individuals who had tormented us for the past several months.
And when Cassius offered me his hand, I stood grinning, teeth and all, as I turned and rejected him.
Nothing had ever felt so good.
Sitting in the mess hall, with my fellow classmates mingling among the seniors, something nearly unheard of at The Citadel echoed throughout the room. Laughter.
For what may have been the first time that year, I was truly happy.
Hearing the speakers come to life, we should have all known something was wrong. I guess nobody wanted to admit it. Because when our headmaster’s voice announced that we were at war, nobody made a sound.
I swear I could have heard a pin drop.
