At about midnight, I'm woken by the quiet whimpers of my sister. They're just about the only thing that could wake me at this hour.
I slip out of my bed and pad over to Wanda's. I can see tears glint in the moonlight and the covers are twisted around her. It's been ages since her last nightmare. I thought they were finally over.
I fix the sheets, sit down on the edge of her bed and gently nudge her across. She rolls over without waking and I get in next to her, wrapping my arms around her. She falls silent almost immediately.
I fall asleep again, and she stays asleep in my arms.
When I wake next, it's to a knock at the bedroom door.
The sun is streaming in through the window.
I maneuver myself away from Wanda without waking her, walk to the door and open it. Clint's standing on the other side.
"Morning," I whisper with a smile.
"Morning," he replies, looking over my shoulder at Wanda, "Still asleep?"
"Yeah. Though not for long, I suspect."
"There's breakfast ready downstairs."
"Thank you. We'll be down in a sec."
Clint nods and heads back downstairs. I close the door again with a snap and turn to Wanda. Her eyes are open now and she's watching me.
"Good morning," I smile, walking towards her.
She groans and pushes the sheets off herself. She doesn't like to talk before breakfast. I guess you could say my sister is not a morning person.
"Aren't you a ray of sunshine?" I laugh, earning myself a death glare.
A second later, her pillow comes flying towards me. I slow time and catch it with ease, chucking it back at her. I miss.
"Come on," I say, running to the cupboard where Wanda hung our jackets last night, "Breakfast's ready."
I flash back to her and hand her the leather jacket I bought for her with the little money and outings HYDRA allowed us.
She pulls it on while I slide on my jumper and we walk down the stairs together.
"Good morning," Laura grins from the kitchen.
"Hi," I reply.
The kids are sitting at the kitchen table in school uniforms, munching on pancakes. We join them and grab a pancake each.
"Guess what I'm doing today!" Lila says enthusiastically.
"What?" I ask, trying to match her enthusiasm.
"Show and tell!"
I smile, remembering how excited Wanda was about show and tell at Lila's age.
"What are you showing?" my sister asks, swallowing the last bite of her pancake.
"This!" Lila dives into her little backpack and draws out a small plastic trophy, "I won it when we went to the fair last week!"
"Well done!" Wanda grins, and, again, I wonder when she learnt to be so good with kids.
"Right, you done?" Laura asks her kids, who nod, "We should get going, then. Don't want to be late."
"Bye," Cooper says, getting up and pulling his backpack onto his back.
"See you later," Lila waves, running out of the house.
"Bye, kids," Wanda calls after them.
We finish our breakfast quickly.
Then, just as we're putting our plates in the dishwasher, there's a knock at the door.
