Chapter One

She looked up at me from the book she held tightly within her grasp, eyes as green as the sea and as warm as the summer moonlight that shone upon her face. My heart stopped as I stared back at her. Any trace of the words that had brought me here to say were lost far beyond my recollection. I couldn't speak. I couldn't think. I couldn't breathe.

The moment lingered in the air, seeming to last forever as I felt her eyes in the depths of my soul. I breathed out a shaky sigh, searching in all desperation for the words I wished to say - for any words to say - as my mind continued to draw endless blanks at every single one of my useless attempts.

The slightest grin began to play across the softness of her lips as she gently brought the book she held to a close and placed in on the empty seat beside her. The loose summer shirt that moved against her every curve slid off to one side as she shifted on the porch swing to face me directly. The gentle light that surrounded us glistened off her shoulder as she stared back at me with a look, unlike the book that lay beside her, it was a look that I had yet to read.

She removed her leg from beneath her lap and placed both feet on the ground. Slowly, she lifted herself up and made her way towards where I stood frozen, never removing her eyes from mine for so much as a second until she was standing directly in front of me, only an inch or so away.

I could feel the heat emitting from her skin as it sent a cold chill down my spine, covering my entire body in Goosebumps. She took note of my less than subtle attempt to hide the nervousness that overtook me and allowed the slight - yet unsure - grin she held to curve up ever so slightly at the corner of her lips, revealing the tip of a pointed k9 as she looked into my eyes - straight into my soul.

My heart stopped. I could swear that it failed to beat for just a second as she stared back at me, and before I could utter a word - or even just a single sound - she moved in and placed her lips against mine, pressing them softly to my own as she gently put her hands on both sides of my neck and pulled me deeper into her. I froze. I couldn't move as I felt the warmth of her heated breath against my lips. I didn't want to move as the sweet taste of her overtook my senses, because, in that very moment, I wished that I could stay there, in her arms,

Forever.

I awoke to the sound of the ringing alarm echoing off of every wall within the tightly enclosed space around me. I reached over to the nightstand on the left side, automatically hitting around on the surface until the sound had seized. The sheets surrounding my seemingly lifeless body were cold from the window I had forgotten to close the night before. I released a heavy sigh from the bottom of my lungs and forced my arms beneath my body to pry myself up from the bed's comfort. The day ahead seemed long and unjust as I contemplated every scenario the near future could possibly hold - none of which that involved leaving this very room, being any good.

Before I could even get the chance to pretend as though my alarm had been mysteriously broken, therefore creating the misguided illusion that I had not yet heard it, and thus, could not attend my first day at what would be my sixth high school in the last two years; I heard my father calling me from down the hall and past the winding stairs.

"Lizzie! You want some coffee?" My jaw clenched at the sound of his voice echoing around my room as if he too were a loud and obnoxious alarm all of his own. At this, I no longer had the option of moving to my own pace, by which I meant doing everything by myself and trying to get by with as little human interaction as utterly possible.
