"Hello, love. It appears work is keeping much longer than I had believed it would. I'm truly sorry for not being home on this special day but I do hope the chocolates and flowers I had sent up to our room were enough to satisfy you for now."Your eyes shift to the glass dining table, the roses and heart-shaped velvet case sitting in the center where the moonlight hit them through the glass.
"Do have a great day, love. I will hope to see you next week. I love you. Goodbye."
A small sigh escaped your lips as you looked down at the voicemail. You hated roses. The cliché always annoyed you.
It was to be expected, unfortunately. He spent too much time at work to get to know his own wife. He didn't even ask how work was. Given your dangerous occupation as a hero, even a small comment on your well being would have been nice.
Scrolling through your contacts, you noticed many of your friends wishing you a happy birthday along with a small video. A small giggle broke from you as you played it.
"Is it playing, Denki?" Eijirou whispers over to the blonde whose face was in the dead center of the camera. He mumbled to himself before nodding and backing away, giving the others a thumbs up.
There was a small click followed by your former classmates walking in to meet him in the center. As soon as Eijirou cleared his throat they all started singing happy birthday.
You laughed hearing Denki's voice cracks, him seeming to be singing his heart out next to Mina who was holding back her laughter. The three of them rocked side to side together, their shoulders bumping as they tried to stay in rhythm.
When the song came to an end Mina ran up to the screen, taking it into her hands as she offered a bright smile. "Happy birthday, my bestie!! We love you!!"
Then the video cut.
"Those idiots," you mumble out, your steps echoing throughout your empty penthouse. The paper-white furniture laid out across the room, the sounds of the crackling fire is the only thing to be heard aside from your breath.
So, this is how a top hero with a husband who simply doesn't have the time for her spends her birthday.
Placing your phone on the counter, you dug through cabinets. There was no way you were going to get take-out being in a mood like this. Sad, angry, lonely.
There was one person you wanted to see. One person who was not in the video sent by your friends. You knew he was most likely working but that didn't help the void of loneliness in you. It was a sin to even want him to come to see you. You were a married woman after all. What kind of female wants to be in another's arms that are not their supposed significant other's?
He knew you better though. Much better than your husband knew you. He knew you didn't like the cliché roses and chocolates, he knew you were a wild child from the start, and he knew that you were not happy in your relationship.
One cannot simply leave a relationship like the one you are in, after all. You were almost certain he had only married you for the publicity. He was the CEO of a massive company now. For people to hear the two of you split up after 'falling so madly in love', it wouldn't do good for either of your parts. You were no underground hero, you were a hero that stood in the light. You were someone that people looked up to and that kids wanted to be like. For news to get out about your divorce, the interviewers would stop at nothing to get your story, even if it meant getting in harm's way.
There was no way you were going to allow that.
As you pulled out a box of your favorites cereal, there was a small knock that echoed throughout the home. Glancing down at your white gold wristwatch, a confused expression overtook your face.
