She took a deep breath, her heart choking with the ugly words that haunted her childhood, she looked down into the water, voices called to her, she sighed and took the plunge.

Years ago
"Kids you better hurry up or you will be late for school"
Mrs funmi Adeniyi told her kids; Victoria, Monica, Jessica and junior

"We are coming mum" junior yelled from his room

"Be fast the school bus....."pimp pimp pimp!!!  the school bus driver horned loudly
They all ran out "bye mum" they yelled.

TENDER HEARTS Montessori was located at the outskirts of the city and that was were the Adeniyi kids attended.
Victoria was the butt of jokes people called her piggy, old grumpy
"Go away ugly"

"You feel,urgh!"

"Go live with your family, the baboons"

That afternoon,at home,Funmi asked,"how was school kids?"

"It was fine mum"

"Vicky, are you alright?,you look glum"

"Why am I so ugly?"

"Who told you that?"

"No baby, you are not ugly, you are just different"

"I hate being different"

Funmi sighed,"would you kids like to have some pancakes ?"

"Yeah mum!!", they chorused in unison.

Kunle came home from work very tired.
Funmi took his jacket, ran his bath water, he had his bath and dinner and sat in front the television to watch the news.

"My parents would be visiting in a week time" he told his wife

"Oh that's great,I hope mama brings dodo ikire ", Funmi said

"You and dodo hmm,"he looked around "where is everybody?"

She smiled "its 11pm,everybody is in bed"

The Adeniyi's came that weekend, Kunle had gone to pick them.

While they were having dinner Mrs Adeniyi said "After I have eaten,we need to talk, it's important"

"Okay mama"

Mr Adeniyi looked around "where is Victoria?"

Six year old Monica answered "she doesn't like eating with the others, she scared we will laugh at her"

Everybody could feel the uncomfortable silence that cloaked the dining room.

Kunle stood up "excuse me"

He opened Victoria's room door and met her seated on the bed, eating.

"Why didn't you join us?"

"They will laugh at me"

"Why would anyone do that?"

"Cause I'm ugly"

He sighed deeply, what could he say to gloss over the pain she felt
"Vicky, you are wonderful and nothing can change that and I love you no matter what, okay?"

She smiled and nodded "yes Daddy, thank you"

"Would you now join us at the table for meals?"

" Yes, I will", Victoria replied him.

"Good girl"

Everybody had gone to bed, when Mrs Adeniyi called her son

"Tell me, Kunle where did you get that kid from?"

"What kid?", Kunle asked, clearly surprised.

"I am talking about Victoria, are you sure she is yours?"

"Mum!" Kunle was shocked.

"What!? Look at her, she certainly doesn't look like your other kids, how are we sure she is yours?", his mother hissed.

"Please mother not this, not now, I will see you tomorrow"

He opened the door and was shocked to see Victoria standing there, tears streaming down her face,"Vicky!",he called as the girl ran off.

He faced his mum " happy now?"

The next morning,Mrs Adeniyi had packed her bags and was about to leave, when Funmi came in,
she was surprised
"Ahan, Mama. Are you leaving?"

"Yes, I am"

"Did I offend you?"

"No oh,you did not"she said sarcastically

"Mama what is it?"

"Are you asking me, when you go outside to bring in a monster to my son's house?"

Funmi was shocked "a monster!! Mama, being ugly doesn't make Vicky a monster"

Vicky came out holding a parcel in her hands" mama are you leaving"

"Yes" she replied curtly

"I made this for you "
Mama collected it gingerly

Everybody were now in the living room.

"Open it open it"

She did.
It was a beautiful portrait of herself

"Wow" Mr Adeniyi exclaimed

"That's the child you called a monster, mama"

His father was surprised "is that true?Arike?"

"I only said what's on my mind"

"Kunle please don't be angry, Arike let's go, I have had enough, Kunle don't bother dropping us off", his father apologized and glared at his wife angrily.

When they had gone, he met Funmi standing at the balcony deep in thoughts

"Thinking again"

"Your mother, she called my own child a monster, indirectly called me a slut and you know the most painful part? Veronica still loves her"

Kunle wrapped his arms around her waist
"Relax, she is gone. If I had known I wouldn't have let her come visit"

"No. You can't say that, she's your mother"

"Beautiful painting Vicky did there"

Junior came out and asked his mother if he could go out

"When will you be back?"

"Nine"

"Not good enough"

"Eight"

"Nope, anytime after 7 is a no go"

"Mum!"

"Alright 7:30"

"Thanks"

Four Years Later

Kunle and Funmi sat in the car waiting patiently for the last luggage to be put in the boot, Kunle was checking his wristwatch.

"Kids hurry up"

In the car, Monica tapped junior tapped junior "music please?"

"Dad is driving"

"Dad, the music"

"Alright pumpkin"

Ed Sheeran's PERFECT streamed through the stereo.

Kunle faced Victoria and smiled "You are perfect my love"

She smiled back
" Thank you dad" but the smile turned into a panic look as headlights came rushing at them from his side.
