On Tuesday morning, I was walking down the hall of my very busy school with my headphones on as I made my way to my locker. Our school was huge and almost castle-like which is why we often referred to it as the castle of lions. It was a private academy with big white walls and seriously high ceilings. The entrance was this huge double door opening and when you walked through it into the main courtyard, you were greeted by a statue of our school mascot, Leo the lion. I was surprised to find him polished but I guess the janitors had more time to clean this weekend since it was Labor day weekend and we had Monday off.
Then, surrounding the courtyard, there were four large buildings that were attached to it by these long, open hallways which also housed our lockers. I really enjoyed that our school wasn't all cement. Just looking out on the courtyard, there were several benches and tables surrounded by grass and this one tree in the center of it. I loved the fresh air our open spaces provided us with, instead of relying on stuffy air conditioning.
As I walked the hallway to my locker, I felt an arm drape across my shoulders. I instantly knew who it was but I pretended to not mind, I just continued to make my way through the little crowds of people. Then all of a sudden my right headphone was pulled away from my ear and I could feel Lance's hot breath on my ear.
"Heyyyy Katie," He whispered.
"DUDE!" I said, pushing Lance away from me and hoping my face wasn't as red as it felt. Having anyone that close to me always made me blush furiously which wasn't my most favorite trait.
Lance gave a good hearty laugh at his own not-so-funny joke. I rolled my eyes at him and pulled my headphones down so they hung around my neck as he place his arm on my shoulders again.
"Honestly, Lance, you almost gave me a heart attack!" I nudged him a little further away but his arm remained draped lazily across my shoulders.
"Well I was calling for you but you're music must've been blasting because you didn't seem to hear me. So then I decided to get revenge on you skipping out on the movies yesterday."
I shot him a small smile and nervously put a hand on my neck. "Yeah, I'm really sorry about that. It's just Matt still wasn't finished unpacking, and my mom needed help cleaning the house and my da-"
Lance raised a his other hand up to shush me. "Katie, those lame excuses may work with Shiro or Allura but I know you better than that. We grew up together and went to the same schools for YEARS."
It was true. Although I met Shiro before I met Lance, Shiro was always Matt's best friend so I was left out of most of their games and play dates. The age difference also meant Shiro and I barely ever have any classes together since he is about three years older than me. But while Matt had Shiro, I had Lance.
Lance had originally been my next door neighbor of about 8 years and then, when he moved to a different street, we were classmates and best friends for the years after that. Lance has always been my support system.
I remember one time at the AP science fair last year, our freshman year, I had programmed and created a little robot dog and called him "Rover". The judges were impressed of course, but my teacher, Mr. Peppers, had said stuff like "Wow, just as smart as you're brother. He must've been a big influence for you, huh? He probably helped you build it too."
In just three sentences he had stripped me of any credit for my project. I had smiled politely and nodded, biting back the words I wanted to say to him.
But unlike me, Lance had no problem putting him in his place.
Lance had strolled up to my side and said "Wow, impressive physique Mr.P! Let me guess, the stay puffed marshmallow man had a big influence on you, huh? And I'm guessing Mc Donald's helped you build it, too."
