Ely slumped heavily in her bed. She checked the clock on her desk, still debating whether she’d crash Desiree’s party or not. Her phone rang, and she immediately answered it.

“Hello?” Ely said.

“Are you coming or not?” Shai asked on the other line.

“I can’t decide, and mom hasn’t arrived yet,” Ely replied.

“Well okay, I’ll be going then…” Shai said.

“Hey, Shai, please tell Vince, I’m sorry …”

“Yeah, I will. Bye then,” Shai spoke softly. There was a hint of sadness and disappointment in her voice.

“Bye, have fun!” Ely exclaimed as she ended the call.

She was about to put down her phone when she heard a loud thud downstairs. She got out of her room and went to the kitchen. Someone appeared to the corner of her eye. She panicked and screamed.

“Hey, it’s just me,” her mom calmly explained, raising both of her hands in air.

“Great! You scared me to death,” Ely said. “Wait Mom, I’m going to…”

“I’m going to Jayvee’s place!” her brother interrupted her as he rushed towards the front door and went away.

“Mom, I’m going to Desiree’s party…” Ely continued after watching Roy leave just like that.

“No, Ely. I heard the news about the murderer and he’s out there on the loose,” her mom stated firmly.

“That’s unfair, how come you permit Roy?” Ely complained.

“Jayvee’s house is just 2 blocks away, and he can take care of himself,” her mother said.

“I can take care of myself too,” Ely tried to reason out.

“No Ely, don’t make me repeat it again…” her mom warned her.

Ely knew when she could passively plead to her mom and by the looks of it this just wasn’t a good time. She just sighed and went back upstairs.

At Desiree’s house, there were students everywhere having good time. Some were drinking, smoking and others were partying out. Shai was a little uneasy… she didn’t actually go to parties like this. As she was looking for some fruit juice in the fridge, she stumbled upon Vince.

“Hey, Shai!” the music was so loud he shouted just so she could hear him.

“Hey, Vince!” Shai greeted back. “Ely’s not here… Her mom didn’t permit her to go out,” she added.

“That’s awful… maybe I can fetch her from their house, right?” Vince asked.

“Cool! Yeah, that could be great!” Shai agreed brightly.

“And how about you?” Vince asked.

“Don’t worry about me, I can take care of myself,” Shai assured him.

“Oh okay, goodbye then,” Vince said as he strode out of the kitchen.

“Hey, what’s up? “ Des appeared out of the blue, looking drunk and daring. “Where’s he going and where is Ely?” she asked as she looked at Vince.

“Vince went to fetch Ely, they’ll come back later,” Shai replied nonchalantly.

“Oh okay, suit yourself dear,” Des said, wrapping her hands on her boyfriend’s neck as he approached them. “Hey, this is Jude. This is Shai, Ely’s best friend.”
