The foyer was rowdy, but I never ate. Lunch was not a subject I was interested in. I also feared encountering the weird sisters. Everyone here was crazy, but not as crazy as those three. It was impossible to hide from them though, I only managed to stay hidden on their good days, which weren't many. I wasn't the only one they teased, but I was the only one that ever stayed at the top of their list. The weird sisters had it out for me from the beginning. My stay at the academy for the past four years had been one I would never forget. The maltreatment and teasing had really become a lot, but not enough to get me to leave. Like any other witch and warlock, I had earned my entry into the sacred Academy. I was the daughter of a librarian, one who had gotten impregnated by a mortal man. After managing to have me safely, she was stoned to death, here at the academy. Now as a punishment, I got beat for her mistakes. There was but one warlock who I knew wouldn't treat me like the other's. But even his likeness toward me couldn't save me. Valentine Lancaster was destined for so much more than a half breed who worked at the library. His attempt to seek me failed the moment his father had been positioned as High Priest.

"You're late." I was his boss and there he stood, reprimanding me for arriving only three minutes late. After talking to his sister, I had left the library for air. Usually the library was my escape but there I was, escaping it. It didn't surprise me, Venus tended to dry out the people she surrounded. It was her curse, she was willing to destroy everything in her way just to get the satisfaction of being the center of attention. Destruction was her main and only reason to live.

"Have you polished the tables?" I hardly ever played or got comfortable around Valentine. My relationship with him was strictly professional.

"Polished and ready for tonight's read aloud." He nodded, watching as I walked around to make sure there was no spec or dust visible to the eye. My cleaning rules were specific and demanding. I didn't allow such a beautiful place to be harmed by dust, no pets were allowed and neither were food or drinks. Though the books were enchanted and protected to remain in their natural and youthful state, I liked being careful. Causing chaos at my workplace was not something I could afford with my living status. I was expendable.

"Good." I wiped my clean finger on the palm of my hand. "I'm going to need you to take over tonight's reading out loud. So, I'm keeping you in charge of the event and I'm asking Aspen to stay with you, she doesn't mind." I explained, trying to leave out the reason for me not showing up to my favorite event of the month. I grabbed the cart, pushing toward the first aisle. My favorite part was putting the books back. Now they were home, safe.

"Aspen?" Valentine quickly followed behind. He didn't usually mind her, as long as I was around to keep her chatting towards me and not him.

"Yes, Aspen." I confirmed.

"Why aren't you coming?" I could feel him frowning, keeping a close watch not to bump into me.

"Because," I paused. "I have to study for my demonology test." My voice lowered, telling lies was not my forte.

"Okay, sounds good." He crossed his arms. "So why aren't you really coming?" I reached for the next book, calling out to it to meet my hand.

Levitating was something I dominated long ago, so it was strange the book wasn't rising to meet me. Looking behind me, I noticed Valentine holding it in his hand. The book fought as Valentine forbade it to my calling.

"Hey." I snapped.

"Evelyn, where are you running off to tonight?" He whispered, stepping forward shortening the distance between us. His body pressed against my side. "Can I come?" His breath fanned my ear, causing me to freeze in place. Valentine smelled of polished wood, dark chocolate and forbidden spells.
