Wangari was not exactly confident in her choice to go with those men.
" what if something happens to us?"
wanjiru asked.
" nothing is going to happen."
she replied.
They were escorted to a hat.
" you can sleep in here."
the man said." what about you and your boys?"
she asked." we are used to being out in the cold. "
he replied.
She looked at the man, he did not seem to be wearing kikuyu clothing.
" fine thank you."
she said .
the hat was clean and organized.
" this is nice , somebody must be living here."
wanjiru said.she lay Kahuria on a mat and they slept on the floor.
she woke up early in the morning so she could sneak out before anyone saw.
but unfortunately the men were up way before her.
in broad daylight she could now see that they were not kikuyu.
" . I did not think that you are luo. how do you speak such fluent kikuyu?
she asked.
" my mum is kikuyu and my dad luo."
he replied.
" thank you for yesterday. we will get going."
she said." what about breakfast?"
he asked.
" no , we must be on our way."
she said." I insist."
he said.
" take it."
wanjiru urged her.
" fine thank you."
she took the oat and milk.
" may I at least know your name?"
he said.
" Wangari."
she said.
*
Their journey back was shorter.
she was however disappointed that their journey was short.
" my hat , my hat finally."
wanjiru said." don't look so sad, my dear, we did all we could."
she said to Wangari." yes I know. I just hope we had found him. now I have to deal with the chief and start to look for a new house."
she said.
" everything will be fine. you'll see."
Wanjiru said." I hope so. thank you for coming with me."
she said and left to her hurt.she spent the rest of her day at the shamba.
she took a skin that belonged to Kahuria at night.
she sobbed as ahe held it close to her chest.
" I refuse to believe that you are dead, my husband. I know you are out there .
but I must let you go for now.
I need to secure a home for your son. good bye my love."
she said.
the moon was full that night and by that she was sure her words would reach him someway.
the following day she went around the village .
most of the fertile land was already taken.
what was left was land that was on hills and land that was declared unfertile.
she walked up a hill and took a look at the soil.
it seemed fertile but she knew the chief would never allow her to live there.
he would probably say it was the villages property.
she went to a land that looked abandoned.
the land was unfertile and the grass dry.
" here."
she said." I should build my home here."
she looked at the sky and could see clouds forming.
she took tore a piece of her clothe and tied it on a stick .
she then put it in the middle of the land.
she ran back home to her son.
" kahuria. I have found land. isn't that amazing. now we can live peacefully."
she said.
