So basically I was going through my Tumblr and found my first ever Dilmer fanfic I wrote almost two years ago! (seems so long ago!!!) And thought I'd post it and see what people thought (if it's rubbish just remember it was my first ever Demi related writing)

The Only Exception

"Demi?" Her mother gently rested her hand on her daughters fragile palm. Demi had been unresponsive for the last few days. No one really knew what happened. The doctors were still clueless and were carrying out every single test that was possible to be done. Test after test came back and no cause was found. Until they found a reason they couldn’t cure whatever it was. All they did was just minimise her pain with basic painkillers and keep turning her body every few hours for support and to limit bed sores as much as possible.

"Dianna, go home, you need to rest, sleep, eat.." The doctor came in. He had treated Demi since she was a small child and got to know her and her family well. He had seen her through some of her worser times and this was new for him. This he couldn’t say he could fix, he couldn’t reassure Dianna that he could save her. But he could promise her he’d take the best care of her possible at this very moment in time.

"I can’t leave her John" she cried gently staring back at her little girl. She may have grown up and be an adult but she’ll always be that little girl who danced around with a hairbrush as a microphone in their lounge during her childhood. She only needed to look at her daughter to see who she was a few days ago, alive, moving, jumping around, happy. All those things she’d do anything to just see her doing.

"You won’t have too" a male voice entered the room. He stood away before slowly approaching. His eyes were raw and clearly identified he’d been crying. His large figure came into the room, and headed towards the bed.

"Wilmer" Dianna exclaimed. She wrapped her arms around him with force, his head instantly sinking onto her shoulder. She had been so grateful to him for the last year and a bit. He had took Demi and made her happy. Giving her everything a girl needs and making sure she felt loved every second of every day.

"Go home. I promise I will ring if anything happens" he reassured her. He gently walked closer to Demi, sitting down in the plastic chair before taking his girls hand gently into his. That familiar feeling came back. That warmth and sense of butterflies flying back to him. It was that feeling that only Demi gave him.

"When did you get back? I thought you had some movie thing in Australia?" She asked, she knew because Demi hadn’t stopped sulking the other day about it and how much she was going to miss him. It was sweet really but still. He had only been gone about a week and she hadn’t left her phone alone for a minute. She was constantly texting him and whenever he’d ring she’d answer no matter what they were doing.

"I got the earliest flight I could…went on about 6 planes in the last 48hours" it explained the large circles around his eyes. "And the movie..I cancelled it, they’ll will always be more movies…but not another her" he looked lovingly at her. He had made the mistake before in the past of choosing things over her and it was the biggest regret of his entire life. He had almost lost the best part of him and this time he couldn’t even think about not being there when she needed him.

"Ring me, if anything happens, anything okay?" She double checked before even attempting to pick up her bag, she kissed Demi’s forehead and whispered something into her ear before kissing Wilmer’s cheek and leaving, John followed behind her and walked her out.

"So, Dem, you look kinda hot" he smiled cheesy. It felt weird to not have her laughing or smirking back after one of his many unnecessary remarks. He would always say something he knew would make her secretly smile inside when he could see she was sad or hurt. He had all those things he shared only with her, that only Demi would understand.

"I don’t really know what to say to you" he sighed. His eyes were feeling heavier and heavier with every second that ticked on the clock on the wall. Every sound of someone outside made him then wake up again, his eyes almost alerting him something’s different. He was almost imagining her moving again, the idea of her flicking her jet blue hair around made him smile again. He couldn’t even imagine their last conversation being their ‘last’.

He must have fallen asleep at some point in the night, he found himself hunched over the hospital bed, his neck was aching and blanket pattern rubbed into his cheek. “Wilmer right?” John questioned. He extended his hand out to shake the other gentleman. He had a folder in his arms, held against his chest he must have been doing Demi’s hourly check.

Wilmer nodded tiredly. He looked over to Demi for a spilt second, nothing had changed in the last few hours. She looked peaceful though. Like as if she was asleep in his arms at home.

"How long have you been with Demi?" He asked, Wilmer had figured since how well he got on with Dianna meant he was someone to trust. She was careful who she spoke too and would never tell anyone anything unless she knew they could be trusted.

"Umm, we dated on and off a few years back. But we’ve been going strong for just over an year" he said without even having to work out the dates. He knew their first anniversary, both of them, they’re first place they went on a date, their "first" time and all the other things guys are most likely meant to forget. He didn’t even pretend to not love her or act like a guy about these things. He had the most specialist person in his life and thats all that mattered.

"You seem like a good guy" he nodded with authority. He was already beginning to leave the room before Wilmer stopped him.

"John, I know you’re not allowed to say this, but be honest, will she make it?" His eyes were so pleading. So much pain was being sheltered through the glass of his pupils. He knew as soon as the doctor left he would cry.

"I can’t. I can’t make any judgment without an diagnosis Wilmer" he looked down at the floor. This was one of the hardest things about being a doctor. The uncertainty for the loved ones who just needed a simple its gonna be okay. He walked out and shut the door slowly.

"Don’t even worry Dem, I’ve got you babe" he smiled and softly laughed, he gently sat on the bed and laid down next to her. He soon closed his eyes. He slept soundly with her in his arms.
