The next few days had pasted slowly. Demi still showed no signs or change; good or bad. She was still just laying there, her face showed no pain but it didn’t show her essence anymore. It was hidden underneath the tubes and machines.
"What does this mean then?" Eddie questioned. He brought up his girls to the hospital to see Demi. He had been keeping himself together for them, but once he saw her there he couldn’t. It was like reliving the time he first visited her rehab, she looked so fragile and alone. And it hurt him to think he took her there, that he was one of the people that made it happen. He just wanted to take her and hold her like he did when she was younger and would have a nightmare and come see him and Dianna. He would tuck her in her bed again and read a fairytale. John paused before carrying on. "Well she’s hasn’t changed. She’s still in a critical state, but its a stable critical state. As long as she doesn’t decrease…"
Wilmer quickly jumped in “what happens if something does decrease?” Everyone’s focus was now on the doctor and a few nurses who had been taking her vitals and completing Demi’s one hour checks behind them. Wilmer had raised a good point. It was something that no one wanted to admit but it needed to be addressed. They all held their breaths as they waited him. “Maybe someone should take Maddie out of the room for this bit?” he suggested. He had often seen the reactions children get to this sort of news, he had known her like Demi since she was a small child. He couldn’t bare seeing her cry.
“I want to stay” she spoke up, everyone had given her that you’re brave look and she held onto her Eddie’s hand tightly as John nodded and carried on.
"Wilmer I.." John tried to speak out but the words weren’t forming in his mouth. "It depends how much she decreases for us to take any action…but if her heart is fighting too much this could lead to organ failure, and even though we have an machine which can help I don’t think it would mean her coming out of this coma, ever" everyone was stunned by his verdict.
Dallas couldn’t stop the tears rolling down her cheeks. The thought of being without her sister hurt too much. She had always had Demi by her side. She took care of her when they were younger and even now she was still checking up on her and making sure she got the right makeup and hair accessories. Maddie was just silent and now holding on tighter to the whole of her fathers arm. Dianna just stood speechless, that was her little girl, what would she do without her? Wilmer walked quickly out of the room. He couldn’t do this anymore. He hadn’t even married her yet, had her children, got a house together, they hadn’t even done anything they wanted too. It was uncompleted. He would incomplete without her.
He walked until he couldn’t walk any further. He found himself sitting in the chapel of the hospital. He had never been religious, he knew Demi was though. She often said how things happened for a reason and God was that decider. She believed in everything and him. He prayed for her. For the first time he put his head into chest and prayed for her to better again. He didn’t know if it would work but he knew that when she woke up she’d appreciate it.
Eddie walked into the chapel, he been told by one of the porters that they had seen someone matching his description head towards there. He nodded down at the cross at the alter and sat himself down next to Wilmer. He didn’t shudder or notice his presence for a few seconds.
“You prayed for Demi then?” Eddie motioned to his current position. Wilmer shrugged, he had but he didn’t even know if it worked. How did you know if that sort of thing works.
“I think I did. I know Demi believes it in this” he sighed gently to himself, what he’d give for one of Demi’s motivational speeches, she was so good at them, if you felt sad or if he had a bad day he’d come home and she’d make him feel better instantly. She’d say one line of something and make everything better. And he couldn’t do that right now, he couldn’t say one line to make her better.
“I love her Eddie. Like I really love her. I wanted to marry her…” He finally broke the silence, he hadn’t been this honest to anymore before especially not his girlfriend’s Dad. He hadn’t even been this honest to himself. He said I love you to Demi all the time, he meant it every single time but when he said it now he really meant it, it had a new meaning.
“You know that little girl in there? She may not be so little anymore. But I watched her grow, I watched her do her first TV show, her first tour, her first proper party, everything, and now i’m watching her go through something she doesn’t deserve again. My little girl has been through more things than most mature adults go through and yet whenever I look at her now she’s the happiest she’s ever been, and that’s because she has you”
Wilmer looked shocked by this. He knew he had made Demi happy, the feeling was mutual there but he didn’t realise how happy. He had got her through some of her worst patches, that he knew, he had been there for every time she wanted to relapse, he had held her hands and hugged her tightly in his arms whenever she felt ugly or sad and he made sure that every time he’d be there and tell her he loved her.
“You know what, she isn’t going anywhere” Wilmer had the look of determination across his face, he stood fiercely up and waited for Eddie to follow behind him, they went back to Demi’s room and he went and sat down instantly next to her side, he picked her hand up and gripped tightly onto it.
“Demi, baby you listening to me, don;t you ever dare even think about giving up, you will always have me to love you and besides when your awake we’re planning a wedding, I’m marrying you and we’re gonna have those kids you always wanted and i’ll even buy you those shoes you wanted, and if you’re lucky I’ll even take you shopping…” he laughed at himself for even saying the last part. He had said all those things he wished he had told her every single day since he met her.
“And one last thing Lovato, you have an amazing family in this room who need you as well” he paused and looked back her family, they were all stood together, holding onto each other for the comfort they all desired. “They need you baby, they all need you and I will always need you” he lifted her hand up to kiss gently.
