John returned promptly within an hour with Demi and a few porters who were pushing Demi’s bed back into the room from the other side of the hospital where all the equipment they needed was used. He looked tired and stressed. This was due to having ordered special requests for her results and scans to come quicker than they normally would. He felt a personal connection to this case and due to the seriousness of her condition it was vital they discovered what was wrong and treated it before it worsened or re-attacked.

Everyone in the room looked up at John for answers. They couldn’t deal with the small talk anymore; they didn’t care how they felt they just needed to know what was wrong and more importantly if It could happen again. They had all been through hell this past week and needed that reassurance, or just hope that it was a one-time thing and she’d recover and be healthy again. They watched as she tried to sit up, her body was still fragile and weak but she pretended it wasn’t. Demi would never let anyone think she was weak or not strong enough.

“I can see your all eager for these results so I won’t stall any longer” he half hearted laughed. He had witnessed many families like this and in these situations. They have a level of hope left and it’s what you hold onto, it’s what keeps you going. And finding out what actually caused you to need to use that special hope is like revealing your biggest secret.

A nurse entered into the room heading straight towards John with some papers in thin folder in her hand. He observed the written files and then stood at the corner of the room. Everyone was sat around Demi’s bed. Wilmer holding onto her left hand tightly and her Mom holding onto the other.

“Right, well Demi I can tell you now that we did your brain scan and it came back clear. So you have no damage there, you’re very lucky as coma patients have an 70% chance of brain damage or other related conditions so we’re very pleased about that…” he watched as all their faces relaxed, smiles flew upon them and they all looked at Demi. She looked for the first time happy since she woke up. It was that relief that she hadn’t sustained anything permanent or that would stop her achieving the rest of her dreams.

“However…” he noticed their sharp faces return again. He gulped to keep himself focused on the task. “We believe from the blood tests we just received the results from that show you may have had an rare version of Yellow Fever….” He watched them all look confused by his diagnosis. Demi stared blankly at the wall in front of her. She knew what this meant. It was never good. That was a disease, which had vaccinations, but she knew more to come. He didn’t look like he was finished.

He flipped his next piece of paper away and carried on. “We however are concerned about your health still, we will give you the vaccine even though you seemed to recover very well by yourself but also noticed on other scans you had a small case of MODS which is a concerning matter….”

Demi prepared herself, but it wasn’t enough. She had a brief idea what it was. Her family around her didn’t as they still seemed puzzled and intensively staring at John. Her heart was beating faster and that similar feeling when she would have a panic attack was remembering itself inside her chest.. “What is it?” her voice was fragile and soft. She sounded so weak and destroyed. This had taken everything out of her.

“It’s multiple organ dysfunction syndrome….” Before he could even finish his sentence Demi’s sobs were loud and painful to hear. She was right. She thought it was that and now it was confirmed. This would never be good. It would involve years of tests. Wilmer had stood up and pulled her tightly into his chest. He couldn’t do anything but hold her and brush his hand smoothly through her blue hair. He hated seeing her like this, it always hurt him. He loved her and watching her cry made him feel guilty and devastated because he was helpless.

“Demi it’s not” John tried to finish what he was going to say when Demi pulled herself out of Wilmer’s arm and sat up straight, her voice louder than his by far. You could hear she was straining her vocal cords by every word. “I want everyone to go” she breathed out. Everyone looked shocked and hurt. “Now” she screamed louder. Her hand instantly wrapped around her throat as the burning sensational magnified. She couldn’t deal with it anymore. All the faces, the people, the noise, everything. John nodded to her family and they all slowly went out the room. He took them to the relative’s room where they had been before. He wanted to carry on explaining a few things while giving Demi time on her own. She had been through a great deal and needed to come to terms with everything. He understood this better than her family did.

Wilmer followed behind, he had a broken hearted face. Demi had never spoke to him like that before. Never. Eddie patted his hand on the younger man’s back. “Demi didn’t mean it…. she’s got a lot on her plate” he tried to reassure him. Wilmer just nodded emotionless. He didn’t believe it. She didn’t want him anymore. And he couldn’t help her. He couldn’t tell her she’d be okay because the truth was he didn’t know that. Whenever she was low in her recovery progress he’d tell she’d be fine because he knew as long as she was still fighting she’d carry on getting better.

“What was I trying to say to Demi and this will apply to you lot as I know you’re all very keen to help support her through her recovery and so fourth. She will be weak for several weeks, I may even say months. This will all be determined her on her recovery progress this week though. We will be pumping antibiotics into her system for a few days; the vaccine will be in there too. We then will keep examining her organs through scans, as we’re concerned while they were affected when they normally wouldn’t be. Obviously all diseases and viruses can be different and alter but to be safe we’d like to keep her in for a few weeks more and just build up her strength while we keep an eye on her body as well…” he told them, they all nodded and understood what he said. He didn’t say anything discouraging nor not positive.

“Wilmer?” John had left everyone chatting among themselves and called the man over to the side of the room where it was quieter.

“I wondered if you’d mind coming with me please? I’d like to talk to Demi with only you there?” he asked him, Wilmer looked confused.

“Why is she going to want me there for?” his voice sounded broken. He was beyond hurt by her reactions. He couldn’t hide it anymore. He didn’t want too it was true he felt betrayed and numb.

“Wilmer, she has just found out what has happened to her, her body is weak and she surely isn’t thinking very well. She said that to her parents as well as you. Everyone in that room has known her longer and is her blood, she meant it all of them and you, not just you” he tried to reason and Wilmer just nodded hopeless again. He knew John was right but until Demi told him she didn’t mean it he wouldn’t be able to accept it.

“Demi, I’d like for Wilmer to be in here when we finish talking about your next steps is that okay?” he asked her at the doorway, Demi nodded quickly. Wilmer came in, a small smile across his face as Demi smiled at him. “Come sit with me please Wilms?”
