I pulled my sweatshirt further down my hands as I made my way to the counter. I ordered and waited for the food to be ready, but just as I was about to pay I noticed I only had a dollar and seventy five cents.
I gulped as I quickly learned every thing costs five dollars. "I-I don't have that," I stammered. The employee looked at me with an annoyed look.
"Then get out. Buy something or get out."
I slowly made my way to the door and stepped outside into the cool October air.
I'm Stephanie Andrews, I know it's a long name. But I go by Steph for short. I'm 21 years old with dyed pastel blue hair that hangs to my waist and gray/blue eyes.
I've always been sort of an outcast with no friends, except one named Renee. She has the brightest blue eyes I have ever seen, along with bright red dyed hair.
We live next to each other in two tiny apartments and I barely have enough money to pay rent. Renee helps sometimes, she has a pretty good job as a hair stylist down town.
A few weeks ago she dyed my hair this color and it's kinda fading, but I don't care. Finally my apartment came into sight and I sighed in relief. I hadn't ever felt safe out at that time of night in the worst part of New Jersey.
Just as i reached my hand out for the door, it swung open by causing me to jump back in defence.
"Steph! Where have you been?!" Renee yelled throwing her arms around me.
"I was getting supper. Get off." I pushed her and she said,"I was worried. You know I don't like this time of night."
I sighed.
She's always been protective of me, keeping me in at night, not letting me go to parties, and the only time I had a boyfriend, she asked him all these embarrassing questions.
"So, wheres the food?"
I paused"...Didn't have the money."
She smiled weakly and put her and put her hand on my shoulder."You can eat at my place if you want. Come on, les go."
We walked up the long and twisting staircase until we reached ours.
Renee took out her key and opened the door, revealing a nice clean living room. She always kept her place clean.
I threw my purse on the couch and collapsed, sighing loudly.
"Do what do you want? There's chicken, pizza, pasta." She asked sticking her head in the fridge.
"I really don't care. As long as it's filling." My stomach grumbled loudly.
"Pizza it is."
We sat at her table eating and drinking for about thirty minuets until I felt as I would explode.
"Thanks for the food." I hugged her tightly.
"No problem. Be safe." She smiled opening the door for me.
"Oh, and here's a little extra." She slipped a twenty dollar bill in my purse.
"No no no! I can't take this." I dug in my purse and handed it back.
"Keep it. You'll need it in the future."
"No." I disagreed shoving it back in her hand.
"Fine." Renee rolled her eyes and stuffed the twenty in her pocket.
"See you tomorrow."
I said by and unlocked my door, put my pajamas on and went to bed. I didn't usually go to sleep when my head hits the pillow so I get on my phone and listen to music.
Tonight my choice was I'm Not Okay (I Promise) by My Chemical Romance, which was my favorite song of there's besides Helena.
I laid my head back and drifted into a deep sleep. !
