I heard another growl as we stood there. I fixed my gaze on the door that it was coming from. It knew we were there for sure. The stench in the house was overbearing.
"Let's go, the others are obviously not here," Stacy suggested.
"But what if they're hiding out?" Jack asked.
"Do you smell it in here? We've stumbled on a nest of sickies," she said back.
I spoke up, "I think she's right, we should go."
Jack huffed and turned away from the door. As we were walking towards the front door, I heard a scuffle under one of the couches and spotted a movement in my peripheral vision that was headed straight for Jack...It's a trap. I say in my mind.
"Jack, look out!" I yelled out without thinking, and I immediately covered my mouth with my hand.
Almost simultaneously, the entire house seemed to come alive as closed doors were busted open and sick people started crawling out from under furniture and corners. We were surrounded. This is it, this is how I die, I thought. All because you made this decision, I scolded myself, it's all your fault! As I was readying myself to be killed, I felt a tug on my arm.
"Angie! What are you doing?" I heard Luke cry out to me. My attention snapped back to what was happening.
Not today! I shouted inside my head as I pulled out my sword. I saw red. Everything that has happened up to this point during this disaster all came out in that moment of adrenaline. All the anger. All the sadness. All the pain. I wanted every single one of those creeps dead if it killed me. I was slashing open stomachs and cutting off heads. Jabbing and killing. The only thoughts that were in my head were 'stab, kill, don't stop.'
I looked over at Jack at one point during the massacre. One of them was about to attack him from behind. Without thinking twice, I undid my holster and fired, not even taking the time to aim. I watched Jack go down with the thing on top of him. Neither one was moving. Oh God, who did I shoot? I was panicking. The only thing I saw was the two of them laying there motionless. My ears were ringing from the gunshot, but I didn't care.
"Jack? Jack, get up!" I ran over to him seemingly in slow motion and threw the creature off of him. I was able to easily toss him off because of the adrenaline still pumping through me.
Stacy and Luke killed the rest while I crouched down beside Jack. His eyes opened, "ugh, my head." He mumbled.
I let out a breath of relief, "I'm so sorry..."
"Don't. You saved me," he gave me the weakest smile.
I closed my eyes and felt the rest of the energy leave my body, the adrenaline had wore off and I was exhausted. The other two walked over to help us up. The battle was short, but it felt like a ton of bricks were just dumped on me.
I was half expecting for nighttime to have fallen, but it was probably only 20 minutes later since we had walked into the house when we left. The only thing that I wanted to do was lay down and go to sleep. No, I couldn't, we had only just begun our scouting mission.
Not ten minutes later, a figure appeared at the end of the road. It just stood there then took off running. Chasing behind it was a quicker figure. I watched the scene, feeling helpless because I had no energy left in me to help. The others took off running. How do they have so much energy still? I followed them with all the energy I could muster.
"Hey! Over here!" Jack shouted.
Both figures turned to us and the first started running to us, "Help me!"
I realized that it was a man, "He's sick! Kill him!" He shouted at us.
The sick person was catching up with him quickly. I have never seen them run so fast. I leveled my gun at the one in the back and fired it once again. My ears rang. The second person dropped immediately.
Everyone looked at me, dumbfounded. I was just as shocked as everyone else at what I had just done. Stacy blinked at me in astonishment, as did Luke. Jack was already walking towards the man, and the other two followed him. I didn't move, I just fell to my knees and watched as they approached the man.
I did not care who the man was, I only wanted to curl up right there and then wake up when this nightmare was over. No one noticed that I had just laid down in the middle of the road, but then Luke looked back and started jogging towards me. As he was helping me up, my heart rate slowed and my world went black.
