All Bets Are Off (a human stuck Davekat story)

First Day

     Dave sat in the car with Dirk who was driving of course. As usual, neither of them spoke and the only sound in the car was the low hum of the engine and the buzz of the random radio talk show. Dave was looking out the window watching the scenery as they passed. Dave decided it was time to actually go to school. He's not really sure why he opted for homeschool in the first place but that just means he should go to school right?

     Dave Strider is not nervous he is cool, calm, and collected. Today is going to go great first off his brother goes here so. His best friend June Egbert his other good friend Jane Harley and his cousin Rose Lalonde also go here. This day is going to be just as smooth as he is. The car shuts off and Dirk gets out of the car. Dave follows and looks at the students flooding into the building. There are a lot of kids.

      He walks inside with Dirk and they split off just as Dave suspected. Dirk would stay if Dave needed him too but Dave doesn't. He can handle himself perfectly. He looks at his schedule and walks to his locker. He opens his locker and shoves his backpack in before closing it. He walks off to history, his first period. He walked in and standing at the desk was a short and angry looking boy. He had dark hair and skin and the glare he was sending was firey. 

     "Signless I told you I didn't want to be in your class." The short angry boy huffed. Dave watched as the teacher who he'd failed to notice stood up. He was wearing glasses and a sweater and he looked like he was mid-thirties.

     "Karkat are you saying I'm a bad teacher," He hummed fixing a stack of papers on his desk. "Rude I'm your brother aren't I"

     "You are acting like Kankri," Karkat spun around on his heels and walked to the back of the classroom. He flopped in a seat and got his books and stuff out. Dave looked at the teacher and back to Karkat then walked over and took a seat beside him.

     Dave watched him but Karkat wasn't paying attention he just muttered under his breath. "Um, sucks having a brother for a teacher," Dave said but immediately regretted it. Karkat looked at him and blinked a couple of times. He studied Daves's figure for a second and then met his shades. 

     "Yeah, sometimes," He mumbled looking back at his stuff. "I'm um Karkat"

     Dave watched him and responded. "Dave," He looked at his desk too and the room fell silent as other students filed in the room and started to take their seats. The teacher introduced himself as Mr.Vantas and he went over the boring first-day stuff until the bell rang. 

     Karkat grabbed his stuff and rushed out of the classroom. Dave watched him and blinked. Karkat was interesting and he wanted to get to know him but the boy seemed really flighty. He grabbed his stuff and headed out of the room. His next class was geometry. He walked there and saw a familiar face. June Egbert his best friend since before he could remember. 

     She smiled happily at him and waved her hand to usher him over. He chuckled and took the seat next to her. "Egbert," he hummed setting his stuff down.

     "Strider," She hummed tapping her funky pencil on her desk. "You've finally decided to come to school like I've been telling you to for YEARS." Dave shook his head at her. She was dramatic as usual. 

     "Yeah yeah, June I get it. You want to go to school with me so you can yell at me during lunch." He snorted.

     "You know it," She smiled and looked at the board. The bell rang and another class was over. June stood up and grabbed her things. "See you at lunch Dave,"

     "see you then." He grabbed his stuff too and walked out.  He walked out of the class and once again he saw the angry boy he met in his first period. He seemed to be very frustrated as he stormed down the hallway. Dave debated on following him but he barely knew this kid and didn't want him to think he was a creep. 

     He turned on his heel going to his next period. Soon it was lunchtime and he went to his locker and put his stuff in it before heading to the cafeteria. He got himself a tray of shitty school food and looked at the student body. There were a lot of people in the cafeteria and that made him thankful that he knew a couple of them instead of being shoved in head first all on his own.

     At one table he noticed his brother and a couple of his friends that he recognized. Jake English who was Dirks on and off boyfriend, Roxy Lalonde, Roses older sister and by extension his cousin, and Jane Crocker, who he'd heard from Dirk was one of the most popular girls in school. She was also June's older sister but she didn't talk about her much. Dave knew he wasn't going to sit there god not with his fucking brother. 

     He scanned the room looking for June, he smiled when he saw her and walked over. She was sitting at the table with Rose and Jade which he kind of assumed she would be. He sat down and June smiled happily at him. Jade and Rose also gave him a wave as well. 

     "Hey guys," Dave gave a head nod as he sat. If he had to be crowded at a lunch table at least it was a lunch table with all his friends. 

     "Hi, Dave!" Jade gave him a wide smile clapping her hands together. 

     "Hello Dave, welcome to the horrendous place that is Sburb high." Rose gave him a chuckle and he snorted.

     "Glad you could make it to the coolest table in the cafeteria!" June chuckled before she started eating her food. The other three joined her in eating and after a couple of minutes, three others walked up to the table. Dave recognized Karkat immediately from his first period. The two of them made eye contact before Karkat sat down beside Jade. Dave looked at the other two vaguely recognizing one but not the other. 

     One of them was a tall girl with short hair and an impeccable fashion sense. She had darker skin and had a packed lunch. She sat down beside Rose and smiled at Dave. This girl was Kanaya Maryam one of Rose's best friends. Dave was convinced that the two of them however were together though he wouldn't mention this to Kanaya or Rose.

    The other girl had shoulder-length hair and a wide smile on her face. She had red sunglasses and in her hands what looked to be a walking cane with a dragon on top of it. She felt her way to the seat beside June. 

     "Oh Dave that's Terezi and that's Karkat," June said pointing to each person respectively. 

     "We met" Dave and Karkat said at the same time. The two of them made eye contact for a moment before Karkat spoke up "He's in my first period." 

     "Oh cool! Glad you've already met everyone but Rez, makes things easier!" She chuckled and leaned on the table, "Now we can all be friends and stuff super easy." She chuckled. The other members of the table smiled and chuckled as well. 

     Dave looked around at each of them he wasn't use to being in a group like this. I mean of course he and his group of four but in a bigger group surrounded by a bunch of other groups. This whole thing was a little overwhelming for him but in its own way, it was nice. 

     "Oh-oh, that reminds me" June clapped her hands together, "My sis is throwing me a birthday party and you are all invited! heh, the invites are in the middle but I just couldn't wait to tell you," Dave smiled at her, Jane always tried to throw June a surprise party but June never failed to find out about them. She was just a big snoop. The parties were always the best though. Great food great planning great execution. Normally it was just the four of them and the four of Jane's friends but I guess 16 is a big year gotta make some changes. 

Dave zoned out a bit as the group started talking. He just ate his food and hummed at the chatter around him. He noticed that Karkat was staring at him. He didn't say anything but he found it a little odd.

Soon the bell rang and the rest of the day went pretty fast. When his final class was over he walked out to Dirks car and they went home. That went better than expected for him and in fact, he actually enjoyed it. It was nice to meet other people and it was nice to spend a bit more time with June. (even if he was super spaced out the whole time) He's glad he decided to start actually going instead of doing homeschool.
