"Hey, I wait for you every day and you couldn't wait only one day for me?" He grumbled. "Yeah, yeah fine." We started walking to the school. It was just a ten-minute-walk to school which would usually be filled in silence but looking at George's expression I wanted to talk him out of the zone he was in.
"What's the problem with you today? Why are you so grumbly and all?"
He grunted again. "It's nothing, Liana. Would you just leave me alone?"
"Would I?" That brought a soft smile in his face.
"Knowing you, you obviously wouldn't."
"So...."
"So?"
"Tell me what's up"
He sighed. "Ok I will tell you but you need to promise first that you wouldn't judge me and wouldn't laugh." Hearing that alone I wanted to burst out laughing but I still nodded.
"I know this is totally childish but Jame isn't replying to my texts or answering my calls. I am worried that he might be upset with me." Jame, Jamenim Christian Linget, is my brother's boyfriend, a junior in high school like me, basketball player like my brother and above all one of my best friends.
"If it was anything Jame would have told it to me. Don't worry GG you can talk to him when we reach school. Though I hope he comes to school at all today."
Hearing that my stud-like brother turned into worried and caring boyfriend. "Why? Is he sick? Did something happen at his house? Wouldn't he tell me if something had happened? Liana, would you tell me what happened?"
"Geez, stop worrying, I am just saying that because he hasn't even texted in our group chatbot yet and I think he is fast asleep. He will reach school by second period."
"Do sometime forget that I am a senior? How am I ought to talk to him if he comes to school during second period?"
"Yah, sometimes your dumbness makes me forget that you are a senior. You always have lunch to talk to him you know?"
"Yeah, yeah whatsoeva"
"Doofus"
"How do you like it here anyway?"
"You are saying it as if I have never been here before. A week or two for two-three times a year counts right?" I sighed. The nine-hour time difference was a bit hard to cope with. Who am I kidding? It was really hard. I used to stay awake at night and feel sleepy in the days. But after a week or two, I got used to it.
"I am glad that you are here permanently now. At least I have someone to fight with. We missed you. What about school then?"
I sighed. "School, it's been a month as a transfer student and it won't hurt saying every day is like the first day; being teased for being Austrian but not living here till now and all. Not a new thing. The only one period that I don't have with anyone from the group and everything happens in that very period. Like why don't Danielle and her minions leave me alone? " George chuckled. "And why are you laughing as if I cracked a joke or something?"
"Maybe Danielle is acting like that because she and I had a history together before I knew I wasn't interested in girls?" I scoffed. He nevertheless continued. "Hey, she isn't so bad. She is doing this because you resemble me. If you want, I can talk to her."
"Yeah big bro have you seen her treat me in the cheer practice? Either she jokes about me or makes the whole cheer squad to completely leave me out alone. Damn cheerleading is only the thing that interested me and being the cheer-captain she is taking that away from me. I am so happy she is graduating this year. And I resemble you?"
"Yeah, we both have this slightly pointed nose and small lips. The difference is my eyes are green like pops and yours are brown, I am kind of a little white than you and your chin is more pointed and mine is more oval than pointed. We are practically like twins as we were born on the same day only different years and we weren't brought up together. Ever thought without that waist-length long hair, you look like me? Wait aren't you so happy that you look like the star basketball player of the school, George Angit Legnard? "
And with that little comment I knew that our beloved GG was back. I can't say I haven't thought about the similarity between George and me but him saying it like that made it feel like there are more contrasts than similarities. "Now don't be so arrogant George. Did you forget that your full name is Georgery Angit Legnard? You better use that name when you want to be a bighead. You forgot that my hair is vermilion but yours is mousy-brown and your eyes are bigger than mine."
"Yah Liana, vermilion. Or calling you redhead is the same. And don't you dare call me Georgery in front of anyone else, Liana."
Rolling my eyes, I said "You know your most-loved ex-girlfriend calls me that right. Wasn't this road to school of just ten minutes? Why do I feel as if it is of an hour or so?" "It's been only seven minutes. You feel like it's been an hour because you don't talk with people much often and this is the probably the longest conversation that we have had in a week or so. Will you mind conversing more often?"
"I will try to." After that the remaining two minute to school went in silence but my mind was full of so many thoughts.
I was very glad to see Jame and half of our group of sitting at our usual place, which is in the hood of Victoria's car parked in the parking spot closest to our school.
I whispered to George "Look your boyfriend made to school in time" and was replied by a glare.
It was Saed who tore first from the group-talk that was happening, which was maybe about yesterday's party.
"Namaste"
"Jyojolapa"
"Good morning Li. What does jyayalopo mean? And how do you bring new ways to greet every day?" Victoria asked.
"It's not jyayalopo, Ria. Its jyo-jo-laa-pa; newar word for saying Namaste. Where are JH?" JH was the name we used to call Jeffery, Heather and John. They were always attached to their hips, even before when we had known them.
It had always been GG, Saed, Victoria and I until I was lost in a park near my house. It is a very small park with swing and slides. I was six years old and George, who was at Saed's place, had promised to pick me up before dark but hadn't picked me up. I didn't know how to return to my house and started crying. That was when I met seven-year old Heather with her grandma; she asked me my address (lucky for me, I had at least remembered that) and they took me to my house. It was seven already when we reached home, my mother asked them to stay for dinner and Heather had been coming to my house since then. Jeffery, John and Heather had been a package since they were children. When you see one, you see all three of them. So with Heather, Jeffery and John became our friends too. Even though Jeffery was a year younger than Heather and John, they have always been close and did everything together; they are even in the same band. Even though I have loved Heather since then, Jeff is my favourite maybe because we knew how it was to be an Asian here.
"They went inside already because they said something like about pulling a prank on Mr Lernard."
I laughed. This wasn't the first time they were trying to prank teachers and they might really be on the teachers' blacklist. Victoria jumped down from the car, slanged her arms around my shoulders and stirred me towards the front-gate of our school shouting "Bye guys" over our shoulder.
