"This is the last one."
"Okay. Thanks dad."
"Are you sure you'll be okay, Kaysa?"
"Mom! Will you stop worrying? I'm fine!"
I was so close to stomping my foot on the floor like a three year old, but decided that it was a bad example when you're trying to convince your parents that you're adult enough to handle the last year in college without your old roommate and best friend living together with you anymore.
"But Calista isn't..."
"I know she's not here anymore," I interrupted harshly, almost expecting to get reprimanded for being rude. I knew I was. But I was so tired of all the stress that I didn't care.
"I don't need her to babysit me all the time. Besides, it's not like she's dead. We're talking and texting several times a day on the phone, and if we like to meet, it only takes a couple of hours to do so. Philly isn't that far away."
I poked my own cheek.
"Which reminds me; I'm not coming home next weekend, since I'm visiting her. Her parents are..."
I immediately bit my tongue. Dad would never let me go if they knew her parents were out of town, and mom would be frantic. Especially since Calista had invited pretty much her entire school in an attempt to get to know them all fastest possible, given the fact that it was her senior year, too. Whether that was a very smart idea or not, was a different question.
"They have invited me to join them for a family dinner since Calista's brother is home from the army," I lied, desperately hoping that they wouldn't ask any questions. And dad saved me.
"Ah. Aspen's home from Afghanistan? I wish your brother could learn a thing or two about serving his country like he does."
Mom smacked his head and scowled at him. She absolutely dreaded the idea of her son risking his life in a foreign country, and she'd made it clear in countless discussions ever since my brother turned eighteen.
"So, about your new roommate... Do you know who she is?"
"Not other than it's a new student in my class. From Indiana, I think."
"And when are you going to meet her?"
I shrugged.
"School starts tomorrow, so I guess either later tonight or tomorrow?"
I didn't even know if it was a 'she'. And it turned out that mom was wrong with her assumptions. It was a male.
My new roommate had brown eyes and the most gorgeous smile I'd ever seen. Still, an obnoxious cockiness and curly hair told me that he was far from my type of guy. I liked the blue-eyed kind with blonde, sun-bleached hair and muscles that showed that he could carry you to the world's end if he wanted to. And of course he would want that!
"Hi," was all the new guy said, after putting down his bags next to his bed. It was already pretty late, and my parents had left a couple of hours ago. I was well situated in the bed I'd had for two years, and with my nose deeply planted in one of my favorite books. The fact that I'd read it seven times before, and knew the plot inside and out, was completely irrelevant.
